1. Immortal X-Men #12
- Publisher: Marvel Comics
- Writer: Kieron Gillen
- Artist: Lucas Werneck
- Cover Artist: Mark Brooks
- Official Summary: A COLOSSAL MISTAKE… The Quiet Council gather to fill the empty seat. It’s the last chance to make a smart, kind decision to prevent the fall. Luckily, the deciding vote is in the hands of trusty old Colossus. Let’s hope he hasn’t got plans to ruin everything. That would be terrible.
- Review: Immortal X-Men #12 is an action-packed, philosophically deep story that has been in the works for more than a year. It has treachery, passion, scheming, and focus on an arc that has been developing for over a year. Werneck still has a few missing backdrop issues, but the art pops and gives heart to every scene. Kieron Gillen uses Colossus’ Russian origin to draw comparisons with Russian literary tragedies, and the theme that fear of bad things happening is what causes them pervades various subplots. Lucas Werneck and David Curiel’s artwork is on point, with Werneck’s linework being looser in some spots. There is one questionable storytelling choice, but overall a masterfully crafted and tense read.

2. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – The Dog of War #3
- Publisher: IDW Publishing
- Writer: Mike Chen
- Artist: Angel Hernandez
- Cover Artist: Angel Hernandez
- Official Summary: The Deep Space 9 crew throw a farewell party worth a corgi’s weight in latinum! But just as they prepare to send off Latty, they are met with the screaming siren sounds of a security breach, and not only is the prized corgi nowhere to be found the Borg headset is missing as well. Now the crew must put their heads together to retrieve their pup and keep the tech out of enemy hands!
- Review: At first glance, it appears that this series will fail. The two plotlines, one about Quark’s newfound love for a dog and the other about the belief that Borg technology will help win a war, seem too disparate to work well together. STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE #3, on the other hand, successfully combines them, setting the stage for a fun and dramatic finish. Today’s issue of this often inconsistently drawn series is the best of its run. It’s an interesting contribution to the bigger DS9 tale. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – The Dog of War maintains a strong Star Trek tale, despite being split between two focuses. The voices of the characters largely sound real, but they falter when they get close to the tension between the two plot strands that are now merging. It’s heartwarming to witness the Deep Space 9 crew bond with the puppy that wandered into their midst, but that’s a far different story from the one involving a gadget that could endanger the lives of thousands. One may argue that the contrast is the point, but if so, it falls flat. Quark’s heart melting as he bonds with his “merchandise” is a great twist. However, Sisko stating his intention to get their dog rather than pursue the security of the entire alpha and beta quadrants, which occupies him as a character during Deep Space Nine’s latter seasons, appears incongruous. The artwork, with its thick lines and rich color palette, might feel claustrophobic at times, but there are some excellent, gloomy panels of Worf going into battle that are worth lingering on for a long. The aesthetics are strong, and both the artwork and the writing are reminiscent of the television series.

3. Star Wars #35
- Publisher: Marvel Comics
- Writer: Charles Soule
- Artist: Madibek Musabekov
- Cover Artist: Stephen Segovia
- Official Summary: IN THE CLUTHES OF DR. CUATA LUKE SKYWALKER…IN THE CLUTHES OF DR. CUATA! The would-be JEDI’S LIGHTSABER is all but destroyed! Enter KYBER CRYSTAL expert DR. CUATA! Only he can repair it…but at what price? Luke’s life will hang in the balance…and only ANOTHER JEDI can save him!
- Review: In Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Luke’s desire to learn more about his lightsaber and kyber crystals provides some interesting context about the nature of lightsabers and kyber crystals. However, as a narrative chapter in the Jedi’s path, it reads more like a reference book for lightsabers than literature. The impact of this chapter on the original trilogy is so dense that it feels like a necessary, albeit complicated, explanation dump. Star Wars #35 by Madibek Musabekov is a superb character portrayal of three involving characters that explores the Jedi’s relationship with the Force. Musabekov experimented with aperture settings, depicting the features of one character sharply, another slightly hazy, and the farthest away even more so. Musabekov, on the other hand, made me wish for more Christophsis stories and reunions with Dr. Cuata and Gretta. The tension builds to a climax that puts each person’s ethics and allegiance to the test.

4. Star Trek: Defiant #4
- Publisher: IDW Publishing
- Writer: Christopher Cantwell
- Artist: Angel Unzueta
- Cover Artist: Angel Unzueta
- Official Summary: With Kahless and the Red Path’s mission to conquer the universe looming over their heads, the Defiant crew must overcome their differences if they’re to prevent another massacre, and it’s the most unlikely of diplomats to convince them of as much.
- Review: Star Trek: Defiant is a story shared by the mainline Star Trek series and Defiant, and it is possibly the most ambitious Star Trek story ever written. The fourth issue of Star Trek: Defiant is now available. The crossover, Day of Blood, will begin at the end of next month and will recount the story of the crew’s showdown with Kahless and the Red Path sect. The result is a thoroughly engaging Star Trek adventure that gets the reader excited for the start of next month’s crossover. The stakes are the highest I’ve ever seen in a Trek comic, and the reader is more than prepared for what’s to come.

5. Bishop: War College #5
- Publisher: Marvel Comics
- Writer: Jason Holtham
- Artist: Sean Damien Hill
- Cover Artist: Ken Lashley
- Official Summary: TIME IS AN UNCONQUERABLE BEAST! Tempo traps herself and Bishop in a time loop of her past trauma. Will she be able to allow festering wounds heal so she and Bishop can figure out a way back home? Meanwhile, the War College students are fighting for their lives, and the lives of Krakoa’s mutants, against the Struckers and Orchis. Help may be on the way, but timing these days has a funny way of putting our favorite mutants in the worst positions possible. Read the last issue of the BISHOP: WAR COLLEGE miniseries to find out how this time-warped, action-packed plot ends!
- Review: Bishop: War College’s great finale takes the story to a gratifying conclusion and appears to have accomplished its purpose of shedding light on an unusual and interesting set of heroes. J. Holtham hits hard from the start of the issue, and it does feel as if the events of the book will have a greater impact on the alternate universe. The work of illustrator Sean Damien Hill, colorist Espen Grundetjern, and inker Victor Nava is featured throughout the issue, lending consistency to the book and putting a powerful Bishop in their hands. The ending was satisfying, but the concept has considerable untapped potential. There is still space to explore the notion further down the line, so perhaps we won’t see this powerful team again. It was a quick that I appreciated overall, despite the fact that it did not explain its end goals very effectively.

6. The Flash #800

- Cover Artist: Taurin Clarke
- Official Summary: DON’T COME TO CENTRAL CITY / THE MAX IN THE MIRROR / FLASH FAMILY / BLITZ BACK / BETWEEN LOVE AND YOUAn oversize anniversary issue concludes writer Jeremy Adams’s acclaimed tenure, with special guests Mark Waid, Joshua Williamson, and Geoff Johns joining the celebration! As the Adams run races to the finish line, get a prelude to the new Dawn of DC chapter of the Fastest Man Alive’s adventures from the dream team of Simon Spurrier (Coda, Detective Comics) and Mike Deodato Jr. (Avengers)!FINAL ISSUE
- Review: The Flash #800 is an excellent anthology issue that pays homage to the character. It’s a love letter to Wally West that sets the stage for a run that will most certainly blow everyone’s socks off. Three of the five articles aren’t awful, but the Adams and Waids teams outdid themselves. This anniversary issue is one of the greatest to suggest to Wally and the Flash Family fans old and new. It also teases what’s to come this fall, with Si Spurrier and Mike Deodato’s story rounding off the issue. This will go down in Flash history as an interesting foreshadowing of what’s to come.

7. Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #13
- Publisher: Marvel Comics
- Writer: Kieron Gillen
- Artist: Lucas Werneck
- Cover Artist: Mark Brooks
- Official Summary: COLD WAR, PART 5Just when White Wolf thinks he’s gained the upper hand, Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers rally under the banner of Captain America. Meanwhile, Black Widow and Peggy Carter clash over what it means to be a hero—and whether Bucky Barnes is still someone worth saving.
- Review: The Cap vs. Cap fight has ended with a thud rather than a bang. Steve and Sam are suddenly all right after some fisticuffs, with Steve apologizing and admitting that he’s willingly walking into Bucky’s trap without considering his options. The story is good, but the artwork lacks a distinct style. Team Cap’s text is excellent, and Alina Erofeeva’s art shines in the scenes of Steve slogging back to his party. Natasha and Bucky both have compelling conflicts, and Sam and Steve’s interaction feels genuine for both characters. Alina Erofeeva’s art is meticulous and depicts the characters in a stylised and slim aesthetic with a highly unique impression. This is not the best in the series but it’s worth reading.

8. New Talent Showcase: The Milestone Initiative #1
- Publisher: Milestone
- Writer: Ashley Allen
- Artist: Denys Cowan
- Cover Artist: Denys Cowan
- Official Summary: THIRD WHEELIn May of 2022, 12 writers and 12 artists came to DC headquarters to hone their skills with some of the best comics creators in the business, and one year later, we’re showing the results of the cohort’s hard work! This special showcases all 12 stories created out of the Ally-sponsored Milestone Initiative…If you don’t grab a copy, you’ll be missing some of the first published work of the stars of the future!
- Review: DC created an entirely new title in 1956 to feature stories and characters that they thought had substance. Twenty-seven years later, in their appropriately named New Talent Showcase, they would try again, this time focusing on upcoming creative teams. The Milestone Initiative #1 is a fun read for any Milestone or DC fan, especially those who grew up watching Static Shock. This collection contains 12 stories starring Milestone world characters such as Aquamaria and the Blood Syndicate. Eaton and Ilhan’s story “Blood in the Water” focuses on Aquamaria, who disrupts a human trafficking enterprise and fights ICE. The Blood Syndicate has had the least amount of character development of any Milestone character thus far, and this is a great highlight. Overall, this was far more fascinating than anticipated, with all 12 stories ranging from good to exceptional. This is a feature DC should definitely explore further.

9. Daredevil #12
- Publisher: Marvel Comics
- Writer: Chip Zdarsky
- Artist: Marco Checchetto
- Cover Artist: Marco Checchetto
- Official Summary: THE RED FIST SAGA, PART 12 Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto enter the ring for a championship bout as their senses-shattering run on DAREDEVIL reaches its most ambitious point yet! They’ve dragged Matt Murdock to the deepest and darkest places of his entire history—but they’re about to drag him even lower! LEGACY #660
- Review: Dancing with Fire captures Matt and Elektra’s relationship well. It builds up a confrontation that will have Daredevil fans buzzing. Daredevil #12 continues to connect the series’ themes as Zdarsky nears the end of his run. In the middle of the bloodshed, Matthew Wilson’s exquisite representation of cherry blossoms provides for genuine dramatic. Daredevil, as reimagined by Zdarsky and Checchetto, continues to throw curveballs.

10. Dark Knights of Steel #11
- Publisher: DC Comics
- Writer: Tom Taylor
- Artist: Yasmine Putri
- Cover Artist: Dan Mora
- Official Summary: THE WINDS OF WARThe Trinity have united under a banner of hope as they go to war against the White Martian threat in this penultimate chapter! But how deep has the betrayal fractured the tentative alliance? Can bitter differences be set aside to save the planet?
- Review: This is the penultimate issue of the first book of Dark Knights of Steel, implying that there is more to come. It allows the entire cast to catch their breath and process all of the twists and turns that have occurred in the previous issues. Tom Taylor’s writing shines, as he finds ways to demonstrate his mastery of the DC characters even when they’re in new and completely different settings. Despite the fact that this is a quieter and more introspective issue, Tom Taylor takes advantage of the opportunity to reconcile broken character ties. With a few exceptions, the illustration, color, and framing choices provide the book a cinematic tone and quality that I enjoy. Some readers may find the emphasis on relationships overblown, but I prefer character development over action. Overall, this is an excellent penultimate issue that clearly stakes everything on the climax.

I read a few Star Trek comics when DC did them in the late 80s, early 90s but they were never very good. I haven’t tried IDW’s to see if they’re any better. The Dark Knights of Steel on seems like something I might get in a year or two when the collected version is on sale.
