    1. Detective Comics #1071

Daredevil #10 cover artwork by Marco Checchetto, Matt Wilson
Daredevil #10 cover artwork by Marco Checchetto, Matt Wilson

    Publisher: DC Comics
    Writer: Simon Spurrier, Ram V.
    Artist: Stefano Raffaele, Caspar Wijngaard
    Cover Artist: Evan Cagle

Partial Summary: “GOTHAM NOCTURNE, ACT II – LOST SANDS / ABSOLUTE, PART 3 OF 3Shoes a.k.a Cheshire Cat continues to prowl the tunnels of Gotham looking for answers of her past, and when she runs into a horde of Azmer underneath the city…she makes an unlikely friend who was born on a Monday. Meanwhile, the Orgham’s long running ties with the League of Assassins is revealed by Talia Al Ghul, and the truths of their relationship affects both Batman and Bruce Wayne. Then, in the backup, Mr. Freeze continues his interrogation of Dr. Mead (or as he calls it, his research) regarding how to fix Nora so that she’ll return to him as Mrs. Fries and love him again.”

Review: The story, structure and artwork in this run has been amazing. It’s a great series and a fun and weird ride. Stefano Raffaele and Caspar Wijngaard capture the tone of the story with their beautiful, dark and expressive comic panels . This issue does a great job of uncovering the mystery of the Orgham family’s Arkham Asylum without derailing the larger storyline. Ram V has written one of the most ambitious and offbeat Batman series in a long time. Batman is the star of course. But he’s a supporting character in one of the longest battles of any DCU comic. A memorable Batman story.

    2. Daredevil #10

    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Writer: Chip Zdarsky
    Artist: Marco Checchetto
Cover Artist: Marco Checchetto, Matt Wilson
Partial Summary: “THE RED FIST SAGA, PART 10A TURNING POINT! With Elektra at his side, Matt Murdock has launched his most ambitious campaign against injustice EVER, but as recent explosive and destructive events have unfolded, he has found himself more and more isolated—and with fewer allies than ever before…LEGACY #658”

Review: Chip Zdarsky, Marco Checchetto, & Matthew Wilson test Matt Murdock to his limit as they put him against Spider-Man. Faith will challenge Responsibility, and this will make Matt have to forge his destiny by going against everyone to survive. Can Zdarsky and Checchetto stick the landing? It’s hard to say Daredevil’s future has never been clearer.

    3. Avengers Beyond #2

Avengers Beyond #2 cover artwork by Greg Land, Frank D'Armata
Avengers Beyond #2 cover artwork by Greg Land, Frank D’Armata

    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Writer: Derek Landy
    Artist: Greg Land
Cover Artist: Greg Land, Frank D’Armata
Partial Summary: “As violence tears New York apart, and ordinary citizens become crazed, super-powered thugs with nothing but wanton destruction on their minds, Janet Van Dyne—A.K.A. the wonderfully winsome Wasp—fights to save not only the lives of her fellow heroes, but also a friendship. Which is not easy when that particular friend is trying to bash her head in. Join us for a story of nonstop action and relentless adventure that dares to ask the big questions, such as: How much punching is too much punching? The answer may surprise you. But it probably won’t.”

Review: The Wasp’s role in Avengers Beyond is effective and compelling, but Drew Landy’s writing drowns the story in exposition. Thankfully the book continues to be engaging thanks to Greg Land’s flawless pencils and layouts. Fans of the Wasp will love this.

    4. The Riddler: Year One #4

The Riddler: Year One #4 cover artwork by Bill Sienkiewicz

    Publisher: DC Comics
    Writer: Paul Dano
    Artist: Stevan Subic
    Cover Artist: Bill Sienkiewicz
Partial Summary: “After a shocking discovery that unleashes a primal scream, we are sent back into Edward Nashton’s past. Like drifting through a nightmare, we experience Edward’s traumatic upbringing, beginning with an abandoned baby howling on the steps of the Gotham Orphanage. Through the filter of Edward’s memories, we experience his brutal past, but also learn about a once-possible hope—a hope that was dashed and that led to his lifelong obsession with and hatred of Thomas Wayne.Actor Paul Dano (The Batman) and artist Stevan Subic continue the origin of the Riddler, leading up to his appearance in Matt Reeves’s epic film.”

Review: Dano and Subic create a creepy story of how Riddler was born, but it doesn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know from watching the movies.  Stevan Subic delivers some gorgeous and moody artwork.

    5. Action Comics #1054

Writer: Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Dorado Quick, Dan Jurgens
Artist: Dan Jurgens, Max Raynor, Yasmin Flores Montanez
    Cover Artist: Steve Beach

Partial Summary: “POWER LIKE THIS! / HOME AGAIN, PART FOUR / ENGINEER OF TOMORROW, PART ONEAs Superman and Natasha Irons race to save Steel from the newly transformed Metallo, the Super-Twins are lost–and alone–against the nightmarish threat of the Necrohive! How will Lois and the House of El find them? Plus, learn the shocking identity of the mysterious ghost in the machine behind Metallo’s transformation as he and Superman face each other in an epic rematch for the ages! Plus: A new era for John Henry Irons begins in Steel Forged part 1! And Dan Jurgens explores the not-too-distant-past world of Lois and Clark 2 in a bold new interlude!”

Review: The action and dialogue in Action Comics #1054 is great, with Metallo and his Necrohive ambushing Jon and the kids. Thankfully  Superman resolves things with Corben. One moment in the comic shows Superman’s compassion. The secondary story focusing on John Henry Irons aka Steel is the best story I’ve ever read for the character. The comic is full of amazing action and moving dialogue.

    Publisher: Marvel Comics

Partial Summary: “COLD WAR, PART TWO – White Wolf has used the power granted him by Bucky Barnes to take control of Dimension Z and unleash its creatures onto the Captains America. Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers are prepared to fight their way through the onslaught, but the Outer Circle has more stakes in this fight than our heroes realize. Can Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers agree on their priorities before they fall to this new threat? And what exactly does Bucky Barnes intend to do to Ian Rogers?LEGACY #747 | CONTINUED FROM CAPTAIN AMERICA: COLD WAR ALPHA #1 / CONTINUED IN CAPTAIN AMERICA: SENTINEL OF LIBERTY #12”

Review: This issue picks up the Cold War crossover event from where part one left off. The tension between Sam, Bucky, and Steve Rogers develops in later chapters. Tochi Onvebuchi and R.B. Silva create a book that balances emotion and action, with great visuals and emotional moments.

Review: Joshua Williamson’s Green Arrow #1 is a fresh and new take on the DCU, with great visuals and exciting action. The DCU’s most complex superhero reveals his legacy. Arrow Family fans will enjoy this book.
