Here are five reasons Christian Bale would make an amazing Beta Ray Bill. Collider recently broke the news that Christian Bale is in talks to join the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder.
Social media immediately jumped on the idea that Bale would be played the horse-faced alien Beta Ray Bill. Why? Because it’s a perfect idea. Here’s why.
1. Christian Bale Needs to Play a Hero
Beta Ray Bill |
Beta Ray Bill started out as a villain or at least looked like a villain. He first showed up in The Mighty Thor #337 (1983). In the story, the American super-spy team S.H.I.E.L.D. spots an alien ship and Thor goes to investigate. The ship named “Skuttlebutt” is the home of an alien race known as the Korbinites. They were driven from their home by the evil fire creature Surtur. The Korbonites were going into stasis and needed a champion. They selected Beta Ray Bill and transformed him into a cybernetic creature powerful enough to protect them. Thor and Beta Ray fight and Thor drops his hammer. At the time whenever he let go of the hammer it would turn into a stick and he would turn into a scrawny weakling named Donald Blake.
His hammer would turn into a walking stick. Beta Ray fights Thor and beats him. Then he picks up the stick and the hammer sees Beta Ray as worthy. So he transforms into Thor. Or at least an alien Thor. The two fight several times and there’s a running argument about who should have the Mjolnir. Finally, Odin settles it by giving Thor back his hammer but orders the creation of a weapon equally as powerful as Mjolnir named Stormbreaker.
Bale would be awesome as a villain but he’d be even better as a superhero. He played Batman for Christopher Nolan and showed all the traits a hero needs. The actor can do it again.
2. Christian Bale Needs to Play a Hero That’s a Challenge
While Beta Ray Bill is a mystery to most people he’s beloved by fans. Marvel Studios has been dropping bread crumbs for years that he’s in the MCU. Hela destroyed Mjolnir in Thor: Ragnarok. Stormbreaker and the creation of the weapon were lifted right out of Beta Ray’s first appearance. He appears as a statue in the Grandmaster’s arena as one of his greatest warriors. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed that Beta Ray was supposed to appear in Thor 3, but his role was cut to give him a larger role in an upcoming movie. “There was a Beta Ray Bill, but it was so quick that you would have the same complaints that you have now,” Feige told Crave Online. “He was in it a little bit more and it just didn’t do justice. And the feeling is, if you can’t do it justice, do it later.”
Beta Ray Bill is a hero and a staunch defender of his people and friends. He braved Galactus to protect his race and braved the power of the sun for Thor. An Oscar-wining actor like Bale needs a challenge after his incredible turn as the Dark Knight.
When asked about how he chooses his roles he said, “I can always see how to do it, and then the challenge is, Can I manage that each and every day?”
Playing an alien hero is the perfect challenge for Christian Bale.
3. Christian Bale Needs to Play a Faceless Hero
Christian Bale |
Thor: Love and Thunder is introducing Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) picking up the hammer and becoming a hero. If Beta Ray Bill appears in Thor 4 it would be the perfect counterpoint to Captain America picking up the hammer in Avengers: Endgame. Anyone can be a hero, but only the worthy can hold the power of Thor.
Christian Bale is known for giving mind-blowing performances Mary Harron’s American Psycho (2000) to Brad Anderson’s The Machinist (2004). But in real life, he’s actually reserved and shy. “I really used to just try to be invisible,” he told GQ. “A teenager usually wants to try to get people to notice him in some way, to feel like someone gives a d**n. Me, all that attention, I just wanted to fade into the background. Be invisible. Disappear.”
Beta Ray Bill would require a lot of digital effects andor make-up. Bale would disappear into the role. Much like Vin Diesel’s Groot, he would be invisible.
4. Christian Bale’s Voice is Perfect for Beta Ray Bill
Chrisitan Bale was born in Wales, but both his parents are English and he was raised in London. But perfected his American accent. But his native Welsh accent is brilliant too.
His natural deep voice has been used for voice work as well. Bale played Bagheera in Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (2018) and the main character Howl in Howl’s Moving Castle (2008). Beta Ray Bill is a thoughtful and powerful hero and he’d be perfect for that.
Even if Bale only does the voice for Beta Ray Bill, much like Vin Diesel does the voice for Groot, he’d be brilliant.
5. Beta Ray Bill’s Weirdness is Perfect For Christian Bale
A lot of people look at a horse-faced alien as being too ridiculous to take seriously. That’s why it takes an actor like Christian Bale to pull it off. “I do like taking stuff seriously that a lot of people look at as nonsense,” Bale once said. “I enjoy the insanity of that. And I like the commitment that is needed for that.”
People thought a movie about a talking tree and a raccoon would never work, but they found the perfect director and actors to pull off Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel needs Beta Ray Bill in the MCU.
