Here’s what will be coming from the re-release of Avengers: Endgame next week. We reported earlier that Avengers: Endgame is being re-released into theaters. Now let’s figure out what it means.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told numerous publications that Avengers: Endgame will be re-released in theaters with extended footage that didn’t make it into the initial film. The movie already clocks in at just over three hours. But the movies have plenty of material left. The two editors Jeffrey Ford and Matthew Schmidt spent two years editing the MCU tentpoles back to back. They told Business Insider they had to decide what goes in and out of the two films from 900 hours of shot footage.
“It was a massive amount of footage with three, sometimes four units working every day pumping out material,” Ford said. “And I’m not even including the motion-capture footage. But if you do a bit at a time you can get through it.”
The ironic part is that Avengers: Endgame is still playing in theaters across the country. Right now the movie has made a whopping $2,743,413,993 worldwide. Avatar is the all-time worldwide record of $2.788 billion but Endgame slowed down to just $3.7 million domestically this past weekend.
At the Spider-Man: Far From Home junket, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed Endgame will be re-released on June 28. “Not an extended cut, but there will be a version going into theaters with a bit of a marketing push with a few new things at the end of the movie,” he told Screenrant. “If you stay and watch the movie, after the credits, there’ll be a deleted scene, a little tribute, and a few surprises. Which will be next weekend.”
So it’s running starting next Friday for one week and won’t have an IMAX screening.
Let’s break it down:
Deleted Scene
Update: A Deleted scene with Hulk
Deleted scenes are always fun and sometimes reveal new plot points or unused characters. We don’t know exactly what it will be but we have a few hints. First, notice Feige said “scene” and not “scenes”. So don’t expect another half-hour.
We do know of at least one. The Russo’s described a hilarious and awkward scene between Thor and Valkyrie after the scene at New Asgard to Entertainment Weekly.
“In the ending, we wanted to keep it tight, so we were looking for things to squeeze there,” Anthony Russo told hosts Jessica Shaw and Dalton Ross. “But he had this beat with Valkryie where she puts her arm on his shoulder and he sort of starts to lean in for a kiss. She goes, ‘What are you doing?’”
Thor is confused. “‘Oh, I thought that touch…’ and she was like, ‘No, that was, like, a goodbye tap I was giving you,’” Anthony recalled. “It was a really funny beat, but we cut it.”
“It was really cute,” Joe added. “And it was mostly improvised by the two of them, so it was very funny.”
So it could be that or it could be something else like the scene with Katherine Langford playing a grown-up version of Tony Stark’s daughter.
Tribute
Update: A intro by the Russo brothers and a Stan Lee tribute
This movie marks the 10-year anniversary of the MCU so it’ll probably be another tribute to the movies with interviews and quotes from stars and crew. Endgame has a pre-movie tribute to Stan Lee, but they’ll probably throw in another one because he’s awesome.
A Few Surprises
Update: A trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home
No idea what this could mean but it might be new clips from the upcoming movies Spider-Man: Far from Home. Maybe a trailer for the Black Widow movie currently filming? Maybe new trailers or clips from the upcoming Disney+ series Falcon & Winter Soldier or Vision and Wanda? Maybe all the above?
Will Avengers: Endgame take the box office crown after the re-release? Probably. When I compiled my list of movies that made over a billion three of them – The Dark Knight, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and Jurassic Park) got the final push from a re-release. The original made over $350 million in its first weekend and is still going strong.
But will people really sit through a three-hour movie to see a few more minutes of footage at the end? Only time will tell, but I’m already in line for a ticket.
The re-release of Avengers: Endgame begins June 28, 2019.
