Jared Leto, who played Joker in “Suicide Squad” has been cast as the supervillain Morbius in an upcoming standalone movie.
Variety reports that Jared Leto has been cast in Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff “Morbius”.
Sources tell them that “Safe House” director Daniel Espinosa will direct the movie.
Morbius, the Living Vampire, was created in 1971 by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane for “The Amazing Spider-Man #101”. Dr. Michael Morbius PhD was a scientist who tried to cure himself of a blood disease and accidentally acquired vampire-like traits like fangs, white skin, and a thirst for blood. He’s been seen off and on over the years but had a short-lived self-titled comic book in 1995.
Espinosa is a Swedish director and producer best known for known for Easy Money (2010), Safe House (2012) and Life (2017). He’s biracial and his father is Chilean and his mother is Swedish.
Sony hasn’t announced a release date but it’s expected to begin production after “Venom” and “Spider-Man: Far from Home”. It’s also not known if this movie will tie into Sony’s Spider-Man solo universe or the MCU. Presumably not since “Venom” has its own continuity.
While Leto’s role in “Suicide Squad” was panned by critics he’s apparently still working on a solo Joker movie at Warner Bros and sources say this won’t affect that role.
So Leto now stars in movies for both DCand Marvel. We’ll see who wins.
