One of the newest, most loved, and diverse characters in comic books today is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’re talking about Kamala Khan, also known as the Muslim Ms. Marvel, and the head of Marvel Studios says he’s working on bringing her to the big screen.
Who is Kamala Khan?
Kamala Khan was one of the biggest success stories in Marvel’s push to add female and minority heroes to its lineup. Created by editors Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker, writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona, Khan made her first appearance in 2013’s Captain Marvel #14 before starring in the solo series Ms. Marvel in 2014. She’s the first Muslim character to headline her own Marvel comic book and one of the few Muslim characters in mainstream comics. Khan is also wildly popular with her series becoming a bestseller. The first volume of Ms. Marvel won the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story in 2015.
In the comics, Khan is a teenage Pakistani-American from Jersey City, New Jersey who discovers she’s an Inhuman with shapeshifting powers. After her idol Carol Danvers gave up the name Ms. Marvel to become Captain Marvel, Khan took over the title.
2019’s Captain Marvel is apparently paving the way for Kamala Khan by becoming the first female-led Marvel movie. In a recent interview, Feige said, “Captain Marvel‘s shooting right now with Brie Larson. Ms. Marvel, which is another character in the comic books, the Muslim hero who is inspired by Captain Marvel, is definitely sort of in the works. We have plans for that once we introduce Captain Marvel.”
Of course, this is a huge deal. Not only will Ms. Marvel be another high-profile female hero but also the first Muslim superhero in American movies. We don’t know if she’ll be making a cameo in one of the other movies or getting her own movie. We’ll keep you posted.
