There’s a movie coming that hasn’t gotten as much attention as it deserves, and that’s the film adaptation of Ready Player One. It’s based on the YA novel about a young boy who stumbles across a hidden treasure in a virtual world. The original novel was a brilliant blend of pop culture, science-fiction, action, coming of age, and adventure (read Nigel’s review here), and we honestly had our doubts about how well it will translate on screen. For one thing, we couldn’t imagine them getting the rights for all the properties mentioned in the book (Ultraman, WarGames, Star Wars, just to name a few).
Yet Steven Spielberg is giving his best try, and Comic-Con has brought the first mind-blowing trailer, courtesy of IGN.
It looks like they’re going to pull off the references, as we spotted Freddy Krueger, the Iron Giant, and Harley Quinn in just two minutes.
Ready Player One is co-produced and directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Ernest Cline, Eric Eason, and Zak Penn, based on Cline’s novel of the same name. The film stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg, and T. J. Miller. The film is scheduled to be released on March 30, 2018.
What do you think? How many pop culture references did you spot?
