High heels are a creation of the sexist patriarchy, intended to demean and degrade women’s value. At least, that’s what you’d believe if you spent time on Tumblr. That’s why some eyebrows were raised when Wonder Woman appeared in “Batman v Superman” and the upcoming “Wonder Woman” movie wearing high heels. We’re not talking about when she was dancing with Bruce Wayne, but fighting against Doomsday.
You can’t really tell in these photos, but you could get a good look when the costumes were on display at Comic-Con.
Given how Wonder Woman is being positioned as a feminist icon, some people questioned this fashion choice. Why does Wonder Woman, raised from birth as a feminist with no male influence, wear high heels? And with sandals, no less?
@GailSimone in the real world I doubt Wonder Woman would wear heels. Not practical. If it was – more male characters would wear heels too.

Well, it turns out it’s because the female director Patty Jenkins wanted her to.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she explained:
“It’s total wish-fulfillment,” she says, adding that the warriors have flats for heavy fighting. “I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight badass, and look great at the same time — the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impractically big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to be. And my hero, in my head, has really long legs.”
She did explain that, during combat, the Amazons switch to flats. That’s practical.
What do you think? Should Wonder Woman have high heels?
