The New “Totally Awesome Hulk” is Asian-American

The continued integration of comics has taken another bold step forward. Marvel announced that the Hulk will be changing characters. Bruce Banner, the longtime alter ego of the Hulk, will disappear and lose his powers for as yet unknown reasons. In his place, Asian-American teen genius Amadeus Cho will become the new Hulk in the Totally Awesome Hulk series in December.

Much like the new African-American Captain America took the existing superhero Falcon, Cho is not a new character. Wikipedia says, “Amadeus Cho was created by Greg Pak and Takeshi Miyazawa, and first appeared in Amazing Fantasy (volume 2) #15, in one of an anthology of stories. Greg Pak brought Cho back as a major character in the World War Hulk storyline, and then as one of the primary characters in The Incredible Hercules. He subsequently starred in his own miniseries, Heroic Age: Prince of Power.” He’s Korean-American, and listed as the fifth or sixth smartest person in the Marvel Universe. Marvel has emphasised that, unlike Banner, Cho will love being the Hulk. The title will also be a radical change in that the new comics will be written and drawn by Korean-Americans, Greg Pak and Frank Cho. Their perspective will be a big part of the series.

Marvel should be getting praise for their aggressive stance on introducing diversity into their comic universe. Instead, they’re getting vilified by the usual gang. We won’t be dwelling on the negative right now. We’re just celebrating the fact that people of color now have another major hero to be rooting for.

What do you think? Do you think an Asian Hulk is too far? Or is Marvel going in the right direction?

I love the diversity leaking into comics. I don't see anything wrong with this at all, though I'm curious about the story they'll have for why there's a replacement Hulk. Between the examples you mentioned and a female Thor, the comic industry is changing in a good way.
