3 Details About STAR WARS: FORCE AWAKENS Characters Revealed

Just in time for May the Fourth, Vanity Fair released a bunch of new photos of characters from the upcoming Star Wars sequel, The Force Awakens. The photos are shot by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz. Not only do they provide tantalizing glimpses of the actors, but they also give us new details on the movie. Vanity Fair has the photos, but has been pretty diligent about keeping other sites from sharing the photos, so go here and here to see them. We’ll be using GIFs to illustrate them…because you don’t own those, Vanity Fair. You hear me? You don’t own them!!!

Now let’s review. This may contain spoilers for the movie, depending on how good our guesswork is.

Adam Driver is Kylo Ren – You know the guy with the crossguard lightsaber we’ve seen in the trailer? Well, that’s Kylo Ren. We didn’t much about him, other than his lightsaber is funky looking and he wears black. But now we at least knows who plays him. Adam Driver will be the powerful Sith (?) villain. In the new photo, the caption says Ren’s commanding stormtroopers, so we know he’ll be a high ranking member of the First Order, the organization born from the remnants of the original evil Empire in the new movie.

Lupita Nyong’o is a CGI Pirate. Another photo shows Lupita with tracking dots on her face, and a caption confirming she’s playing a CGI character named Maz Kanata. According to the caption of another photo, Kanata will be a pirate with a castle full of alien and human crew, so it sounds like a powerful role. But will Kanata be on the side of good or evil? Dun dun dunnn…I admit, I’m disappointed she won’t be playing a flesh and blood character. Having a minority actress playing an alien (?) isn’t the same as having an actual minority actress (see: Avatar).

Gwendoline Christie is the Chrometrooper – When it was announced that Christie (Brienne from Game of Thrones) would be cast in the upcoming movie, many wondered what role she would play. How could the towering Amazon fit into the universe? At the same time, in the recent trailer, some people noticed a stormtrooper with silvery armor. The stormtrooper was dubbed by fans the Chrometrooper. Well, Vanity Fair confirmed Christie will be playing the Chrometrooper, officially known as Captain Phasma. She’s an officer of the First Order. Bada$$ Digest has a rumor she’s the commanding officer of Finn (the black stormtrooper) who goes rogue, and is tasked with tracking him down.

What do you think of the new details? Does it make you more or less excited about the movie?

CGI characters can be tricky. They don't always fit seamlessly. It would've been better if she were a real person.

Cool tidbits! I hadn't heard that Gwendolyn Christie would be in it. That makes me happy! I think she'll be awesome. ๐Ÿ˜€

Have to wonder where another Sith came from. I hope they don't go the clone of the Emperor or Vader route.

I agree. She's awesome on GOT

CGI is getting better, but it's still not the same
