Avengers 2: Age of Ultron (2015) – Ultron (James Spader)

Hot off the Internet, here’s the new trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron and time for one of our ridiculously detailed shot-by-shot breakdown of the trailer. We did one for the first Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer, so let’s do it again.

    First, here’s the trailer:

A lot of it seems like alternate shots from scenes we saw in the last trailer, but let’s do a breakdown of some new moments and what they mean.

Just so you know this won’t be a chronological breakdown of the trailer. It’s cut in a way to hide certain things, so the best way to do a breakdown is in logical order. That’s what we’re going to do.

    WARNING: MASSIVE SPOILERS TO FOLLOW

    Hawkeye’s New Costume

We see shots of his Clint Baron’s new outfit.
It’s very different from the one in the last movie. We don’t see much,
but we’re hoping it looks more like the costume from the comics.

    Captain America’s Avengers Logo

Steve has a new suit and it has an Avengers logo on it. Since
S.H.I.E.L.D. is gone, he’s joined the “Avengers Initiative” full time.

    Black Widow’s New Outfit

Black Widow has a new costume which looks a lot like the costume from the comic “Fear Itself.” In that comic Tony Stark makes enhanced suits for the heroes. Is this Stark Industries tech?

    The Helibus

There’s a shot where we see Hawkeye herding civilians into what looks like a bus, but the fins seem to indicate this vehicle can fly.

This is a flashback. How do we know? He’s missing sleeves. Hawkeye’s wearing
his uniform from the first Avengers film.

Maybe it’s a scene from the
New York battle, but it could also be a mission we’ve never seen
    before. The landscape looks familiar.

    Wanda Falls

We see a woman trying to get into the Helibus and falling. She’s dressed a lot like Wanda is in the first trailer. Wanda Maximoff and her twin brother Pietro start out as villains working with Ultron and later become superheroes. Wanda is known as Scarlet Witch, who can change the probabilities of events and can induce dreams that mess with people’s minds. Pietro becomes the super-fast hero known as Quicksilver.

This image in itself is not suggestive, but if you look at
the landscape it’s very similar to the one from the first trailer which
shows Pietro and Wanda screaming at someone. If we connect the two
together we get a slightly better idea of the scene. What if the
Avengers come to save a bunch of people using a ship? Some fall behind,
but the ship has to leave or everyone will be killed. What if Pietro and Wanda
are part of a group left behind to die? That would make them pretty mad. Mad enough to join a crazy genocidal robot.

    Terragon Mist(?)

Another thing we notice is a conspicuous red fog. Marvel’s Agents of
    S.H.I.E.L.D.
may have established the Terragon Mist in the finale which
grants superpowers to a select few. It’s a key component in Marvel’s ongoing strategy since it lets them replace mutants (which they don’t have the rights to) and will lead to The Inhumans movie. If so, then this
is when the Twins get their powers. We could be off on this one though,
since Captain America: The Winter Soldier established that the Twins
were part of a HYDRA experiment. So, it could just be a flare.

    The Origin of Ultron

Ultron is a highly advanced computer intelligence created by Tony Stark that takes on a robot body. We get several clues as to Ultron’s origin in this trailer, but the biggest clue comes from a leaked Avengers: Age of Ultron toy description of Ultron.

“First discovered as a simple computer program hidden among the ruins of the Chitauri invasion of New York, the being known as Ultron soon completed the development into a sophisticated intelligence after some experimentation by Tony Stark. Ultron’s first shocking ultimatum upon gaining consciousness was to declare the human race it’s enemy.”

Marvel’s says Tony Stark created an army of robots to protect the world and the project goes horribly wrong. The last trailer showed the Avengers team relaxing when Ultron crashes the party.

Notice that Ultron has the Avengers logo on his chest. They know who he is because Banner calls him by name.

Thor says, “You’ve meddled with something you don’t understand” which would be true if Stark starts messing with alien technology without understanding how it works.  It would also explain why he gets in Stark’s face and why the team is so angry at him.

    Ultron’s Blast

There are two separate clips which may be related. Iron Man goes flying and Ultron shows his ability to blast energy from his hands. Are they related? And why do they look so similar to Scarlet Witch’s energy blasts? Does he take her power?

“I’m Going to Tear You Apart from the Inside”

    Ultron
says this during a battle and it seems to indicate he’s going to blast
someone apart, but what if it’s out of context? What if he’s talking
about the Avengers team? What if he’s talking about tearing the team
apart using someone from inside the team?

    Banner Hulks Out

Either Banner loses control or decides it’s time lay some green smack-down on somebody. His glowing green eyes mean he’s getting ready
    to change.

    Hulk vs. Iron Man

We see a lot more of the fight between the Hulk and Iron Man.

The big question is why are they fighting? Is it just rage? Or something more?

    Hulk’s Red Eyes

The biggest question from the trailers is why Hulk is fighting Iron
Man. We get a look at his freaky red eyes which looks a lot like the
    look in Scarlet Witch’s eyes.

He’s under the mind-control of Wanda
who’s working with Ultron. Does that indicate he’s being controlled by Scarlet Witch? Or does he have pink eye?

    Battle in Africa

In the background of the epic Iron ManHulk brawl we see a building with the South African flag.

    We
know they filmed scenes in Johannesburg and this is definitely the
location of the Hulk-Out. Besides the flag there’s also a sign for Nyama and Chips which is a popular South African restaurant chain.

Maybe they’ll head there for a meal after the battle. There have been persistent rumors that the African superhero known as Black Panther will make an appearance in the movie. These are more clues that we’ll meet Black Panther in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

    Hulk and Black Widow

    In
the last trailer we got see Black Widow and Hulk touching hands. Or are
they? What if there’s something in between them like a force field?
Anyway, Hulk’s eyes aren’t red anymore so maybe this is the aftermath of
    the battle.

    Ulysses Klaw

    At one
point, we also see Andy Serkis. His role is a mystery. We know he’s
helping do motion capture, but he
also has a role in the film. He refuses to say what it is of course.
It’s been rumored he’s playing one of Black Panther’s enemies, Ulysses Klaw. The facial hair certainly points in that direction and he has a claw necklace.

In the comics, Klaw is a scientist who tried to invade Wakanda for their mountain of priceless vibranium that’s stronger than steel, a third the weight and completely absorbs vibration. Based on his old-timey
clothes, it’s a flashback and we see him holding a gun on someone. Klaw killed T’Challa’s father and this led his son to
become the new Black Panther. It’s establishing how the U.S.
government got the sample of vibranium to build Captain America’s
    shield.

    Dora Milaje

At one point, we see a mysterious black woman with a shaved head drop her robe. She looks a lot
like one of the African Wakandan warriors known as the Dora Milaje (the
    Adored Ones).

They’re the personal bodyguards of the Black Panther,
recruited from every tribe of Wakanda that fight for the king. Since
they’re considered the best of Wakandan women they’re also possible
consorts for Black Panther to choose a queen. In the comics, they
helped Black Panther fight on many occasions, especially Civil War
which might be a setup for his appearance in Captain America: Civil War. Or is it possibly an Asgardian, since this is the same pool of water we saw Thor standing in the teaser?

    Young Natasha Romanoff

We get a quick cut from grown-up Natasha to a younger looking girl. Then a woman with red fingernails grabs her face. Chances are this another dream by Wanda, but it might also tell some of her tragic past. In the comics Natasha is an orphan and is forced into Department X, which brainwashes orphan girls and turns them into spies. The surgery scene might be part of it since the woman’s hand is the same.

    Ultron’s Robots Are the Baddest

Captain America fights a robot and it’s probably not Ultron. It looks like one of his drones. It easily chokes out the star-spangled Avenger.

    The Mystery Blonde

One of the few clips that exists in both trailers is this shot of a mysterious blonde woman and a young boy running in the crowd. It might be a coincidence, but she might also be very important to the plot. That, or the editors just like cleavage.

    Here’s the official synopsis:

    “Marvel Studios presents ‘Avengers: Age
of Ultron,’ the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all
time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping
program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron
Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and
Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs
in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to the
Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy
alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique
    global adventure.

“Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ stars Robert Downey Jr., who
returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris
Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk.  Together with
Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and
with the additional support of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie
Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, the team must reassemble to defeat James
Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human
extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful
newcomers, Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Pietro
Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and meet an old friend in a
new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision.”

    Directed by Joss Whedon

Starring: Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, James Spader

Release date: May 1, 2015 (USA)

Good point about the red eyes. Perhaps the Hulk does fall under control of the Witch.
We know the Twins were created by Hydra, so I'm not sure the red dye is more than that.
      A lot to ponder!

MInd Blown!! Great easter egg breakdown!

It would be nice to see The Black Panther in this movie, even a cameo.
I have one question, where is Vision? They seem to be keeping him close to the chest.

    3. Clarissa Draper on January 13, 2015 7:48 pm

Wow, you really do a great job breaking down the trailer! Thanks for showing it.

    4. Maurice Mitchell on January 13, 2015 8:26 pm

Good question David! I'm thinking they're following the pattern of the last Avengers film. They showed a bunch of teasers and trailers, but only showed the Hulk last. I think they'll do the same with Vision. BUT there has been some leaked concept art of Vision which you can see here: http://bit.ly/1C3DdEu

Hey thanks Clarissa! We're happy to do it and it's worth it when you guys enjoy it.

Yeah, there's a lot to think about in the new trailer Alex. We'll know more in May for sure.

    7. DAVID WALSTON on January 13, 2015 8:32 pm

      Thanks, that makes sense.

    8. Pat Dilloway on January 14, 2015 4:11 am

They're pretty tricky with trailers these days. For instance in the trailer for "The Gambler" he says, "If you don't have the magic, don't bother!" But watching the movie, that line in the trailer is actually spliced from two different lines! And sometimes stuff from the trailer doesn't make the final cut. But never underestimate the power of cleavage.
