Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi – Boba Fett (Jeremy Bulloch) |
Here are all the reasons I know Gareth Edwards is directing the Star Wars Boba Fett movie. Last week I posted an article with the title “Boba Fett Director Announced.” Drew of HitFlix.com yelled at me on Twitter saying I’m “100%” wrong.
Well, I admit it’s not official, but I don’t think I’m 100% wrong. I
think I’m 90% right and here’s why. Drew is entitled to his opinion, but I don’t want anyone accusing me of lying to you guys.
First, since I was accused of misleading my readers, I’m putting this disclaimer:
The following is pure speculation on my
part and is completely based on unconfirmed rumors. The Geek Twins is

Here is the officially announced that Gareth Edwards is directing the Star Wars standalone movie slated for December 2016:
Gareth Edwards and Gary Whitta Onboard for Star Wars Stand-Alone Film
In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and
Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will
offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Gareth Edwards will direct the
first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta. The film is
due out December 16, 2016.
Gareth Edwards blazed into the filmmaking forefront with his acclaimed
work on Monsters, a film he wrote, directed and served on as
cinematographer and visual effects artist. The skill and vision readily
apparent in Monsters earned him the high-profile spot directing this
year’s smash hit Godzilla.
“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the
rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited
& honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm,” said Edwards.
Gary Whitta’s screenwriting credits include 2010’sThe Bookof Eli
starring Denzel Washington. He is also well known as a journalist and
editor in the video game industry, as well as part of the BAFTA
award-winning team on Telltale Games’ adaptation of The Walking Dead.
Whitta states, “From the moment I first saw the original movie as a
wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration
to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to
me, so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy,
especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is
literally a dream come true. I’m still pinching myself.”
Those are the official facts from StarWars.com. Now, here are all the reasons I’m confident that Gareth
Edwards is directing Star Wars: Boba Fett.
1. Boba Fett is One of the Standalone Movies
“There has been
speculation about some standalone films that have been in development,
and I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few
stand-alone films,” Iger told CNBC. Director John Schnepp said “One of
them is Boba Fett. It is. I know. I know for a fact. I will never
reveal my source, but it is the one written by Lawrence Kasdan.”
2. Rumored Movie Schedule
A recent leak shows theBoba Fett film scheduled for 2016 which is the same time as Edwards’ movie.
3. Boba Fett Movie Scheduled First
Entertainment Weekly reported
that the Boba Fett movie is coming first followed by the Han Solo
prequel.
Entertainment Weekly has learned details on two of the
spin-off projects: A young Han Solo saga, focusing on the wisecracking
smuggler’s origin story, and a bounty hunter adventure with Boba Fett
at the center of a rogue’s gallery of galactic scum…The Boba Fett film
would take place either between “A New Hope” and “The Empire Strikes
Back,” or between “Empire” and “Jedi”, where the bounty hunter was last
seen plunging unceremoniously into a sarlacc pit.
4. Problems With Boba Fett Movie
Fan site Making Star Wars
received several tips from a recent “executive breakfast” in the park.
Allegedly, the subject of a certain infamous Mandalorian was on the
lips of many people mingling at the event. Particularly, their main
concern was: “Lucasfilm wants Boba Fett to remain menacing and scary
but we have to make him the hero of the film and it is a real
challenge.”
Why are they working so hard on it? Why don’t we hear about
them working on another film? Because it’s the next one. This also
leads to the next clue.
5. Boba Fett Writer Replaced
The rumor said that the Boba
Fett movie is being written by Lawrence Kasdan, one of the writers of
the original Star Wars movies. But the official announcement says the
Edwards’ movie is being written by Gary Whitta.
Does this prove Edwards isn’t
writing the Star Wars film? Nope. In fact, it proves it’s the Boba Fett
film. Because it says they’re having so much trouble with the movie
that they decided to hire another writer. Especially a writer skilled
at writing about antiheroes.
6. The First Movie Should Be Boba Fett
Boba Fett makes sense as the first stand-alone film. He’s the most
popular character in Star Wars that we know nothing about. A well done
stand-alone film could be brilliant. He’s only on screen for about 20
minutes. He only said four lines in the original trilogy yet fans around the world want more Boba Fett. He’s the perfect character to focus on first.
Do you think it’s possible Gareth Edwards is directing the Boba Fett movie? Do you think he’d do a good job? Are you looking forward to a movie starring everyone’s favorite bounty hunter?

Considering Edwards is a character driven director, yes, I think he could do it. He would know how to make Boba Fett human and accessible, and invoke our empathy.
It seems very likely that the Boba Fett movie would be first, unless they keep having problems with it, in which case maybe they'd have to push it back.
Great points! You hit the nail on the head with associating Gareth Edwards with "writer skilled at writing about anti heroes." That was what Godzilla was all about.
I definitely would love to have Boba Fett be the first spin of film, and directed by Edwards.
