20 Facts You Didn’t Know About Bryan Singer’s First “X-Men” Movie [List]

    X-Men (2000) - Wolverine (Hugh Jackman)
    X-Men (2000) – Wolverine (Hugh Jackman)

Find out some amazing facts about Bryan Singer’s first X-Men movie that you probably didn’t know. The X-Men: Days of Future Past trailers have been blowing us away, but it was 14 years ago that director Bryan Singer first blew us away with a radically different look for a superhero film.

Here are some amazing things about the film that make it a classic.

    1. Jackman didn’t realize wolverines were real animals and studied wolf behavior to
prepare for his role. Singer had to explain to him it was metaphorical
and that there’s no point in studying real wolverines.

    2. In the film Xavier says they named themselves “X-Men” after him, but in
the comics the “X” stood for the “extra” power which “ordinary”
    humans lacked.

    3. Hugh Jackman accidentally took a cold shower and it started his habit of taking an ice cold shower in the morning
“because it really pisses me off, and that’s pretty much where Logan
lives, like he’s forced to take a cold shower all the time.”

    4. Wolverine was almost played by Edward Norton.

    5. Joss Whedon wrote a draft of the script that was rejected.  They left in the infamous joke about what happens when a toad is hit by lightning.

    6. The majority of the movie was filmed in Canada including the scenes on Ellis Island.

    7. When Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart sat down to film the chess scene Singer told them to
ad-lib some chess moves. Both had to admit they didn’t know how to play
    chess
    .

    8. The Nazi concentration camp scene was filmed at the old Gooderham & Worts Distillery in Canada.

    9. In the comics Wolverine is short at 5′ 3″. Hugh Jackman is 6′
2″. So, in order for James Marsden, who’s 5′ 10″, to look taller than
him he had to wear platform shoes.

    10. Applying the full body makeup and 100 prosthetic pieces to turn Rebecca Romjin into the blue-skinned Mystique took almost nine hours.

    11. During a celebratory party after shooting Romjin had too many shots of tequila and vomited. Because of the make-up, it came out blue.

    12. Roger Ebert gave X-Men a thumbs down.

    13. Singer had never heard of the comic books until he was offered the movie.

    14. To stay under the $75 million dollar budget they cut Pyro, Beast
and the Danger Room training scene. All three ended up in the sequels.

    15. Beast’s blue fur and makeup was a major reason he was cut to
save costs.  His role as a scientist and a political activist were
    given to Jean Grey.

    16. Ex-wrestler Tyler Mane was originally approached to do stunt work but Bryan Singer immediately decided he had the perfect look for Sabretooth.

17 In the original script Magneto wasn’t hunting Rogue to put her in the machine. He wanted Wolverine.

    18. During the airplane scene with Senator Kelly, Rebecca Romjin accidentally kicked Bruce Davidson in the face.  He said he didn’t mind being kicked by a naked supermodel.

    19. In order to keep the realistic feel of the film he banned comic books from the set. The crew smuggled them on anyway.

    20. While Wolverine has his trademark cigar in several scenes, it’s never lit.

    21. Hugh Jackman was a last minute casting after actor Dougray Scott pulled out to film Mission Impossible II. Jackman only had three months to get in shape.

Which is your favorite trivia fact? Did you learn anything new? What was your favorite scene in X-Men?

      Blue vomit!
Studying wolverines? Hugh, they are mean and nasty – that's all you need to know.
And Singer may be in a bit of predicament right now…

    2. DAVID WALSTON on April 21, 2014 2:37 pm

      I wouldn't mind getting kicked!

    3. Rusty Carl on April 21, 2014 3:30 pm

Wait, Wolverines are real? That's awesome.

    4. Pat Dilloway on April 21, 2014 4:37 pm

I saw a nature film on wolverines. They're pretty misunderstood, like raccoons. It's weird to think English guys like Stewart and McKellan don't know how to play chess.

    5. Tony Laplume on April 21, 2014 5:15 pm

      Wait, there are X-Men comics?

    6. Sia McKye on April 21, 2014 5:19 pm

NINE hours? Yikes. Wolverine has always been a favorite of mine. I had to laugh when I read that neither Patrick Stewart or Ian McKellan played chess.

      Fun post.

"I'm the best in what i do kid, and what i do ain't nice". sums up wolverine nicely.

    8. Andrew Leon on April 21, 2014 8:00 pm

No, nothing new, but I am still so glad Scott didn't get the part of Wolverine. He's… horrible.
Also, Jackman got his… package… twisted in the harness while they were filming the Liberty fight scene. Because of the realism he brought to Wolverine, no one realized he was in pain until the scene was finished and they took him out of the harness.

    9. LDianeWolfe on April 21, 2014 8:31 pm

Edward Norton wouldn't have made for a very sexy Logan.

    10. Maurice Mitchell on April 21, 2014 9:42 pm

You never know L. He was great in American History X.

    11. Maurice Mitchell on April 21, 2014 9:45 pm

Yeah, Scott's career went in a different direction and it's for the best. That's funny Andrew! Link?

    12. Maurice Mitchell on April 21, 2014 9:46 pm

      You got that right Bub.

    13. klahanie on April 21, 2014 9:55 pm

I knew wolverines were real. They wander around in my garden, along with my magical wee folks.

      Pawsitive wishes,

Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest superhero.

    14. Andrew Leon on April 21, 2014 10:17 pm

Oh, man, it's been so long since I read that, I don't even remember the source. In fact, I think the first time I read it it was an actual physical source. But I'll check later, if I can make time, and see if I can find it.

Another thing about beast: They avoided him because of too many blue mutants. If Cummings hadn't decided he didn't want to do Nightcrawler again, we might have never seen Beast.

    15. Maurice Mitchell on April 21, 2014 10:27 pm

They're new Tony. They must have sprung up over night

    16. Maurice Mitchell on April 22, 2014 12:03 am

I would think that would be part of basic schooling Pat.

    17. Maurice Mitchell on April 22, 2014 12:05 am

It must have been a funny conversation Rusty.

    18. Maurice Mitchell on April 22, 2014 12:05 am

I'd take a few lumps myself David.

    19. DAVID WALSTON on April 22, 2014 1:18 am

      😉

    20. Maurice Mitchell on April 22, 2014 1:21 am

      Indeed Alex.

    21. Maurice Mitchell on April 22, 2014 1:23 am

Another good one, there are a lot of blue mutants.

    22. Tom Badguy on April 23, 2014 5:24 am

Never knew about the comics until asked to direct…

Banned comic books from the set…

NO WONDER THESE MOVIES ARE COMPLETE GARBAGE!

    23. Paul Bronfman on May 21, 2014 8:22 pm

That shot of Hugh Jackman on the plane with Singer and the superman boy and a bevy of other men boys all looking very horny and GQ.

      #gay

    24. pedoTrivia on November 23, 2014 4:29 pm

FUN FACT: Bryan Singer is a child molesting pedophile and any lead man sleeps with him. Hugh Jackman video proof, listen closely! Go to youtube add this to url: /watch?v=v8JScXp-Ld0
Or just type both names together.

    25. Innocent Mk on September 11, 2017 12:03 pm

No matter what type of party you are planning, choosing a Comedy Singer will offer you and your guests a nice mix of comedy and music as your chosen act performs rather clever songs usually consisting of taboo topics.
