Geek Bits: Alternate BACK TO THE FUTURE Posters, HUNGER GAMES Summer Camp and More [Links]

    Hunger Games camp

What if Star Wars were made an Australian beer commercial? Who has the greatest blog name ever? What did the poster for Back to the Future almost look like? Why would kids “kill” each other at summer camp?

    By the Way…

I normally post at 8AM Arizona time till (thanks to a comment from Alex) I realized I forgot about Daylight Savings Time. We in Arizona got rid of that thing years ago. So, now I’m going to start posting at 6AM our time which would be 8AM on the East Coast.

Here are this week’s top ten 11 geekiest bit of the Internet right now.

    Links

    11. Hunger Games themed Summer Camp Raises Concerns

As much fun as it is to have kids kill each other it was bound to happen. In Florida at the Country Day School in Largo they’ve opened a summer camp where kids can fight to the “death.”

Based on the best-selling dystopian book series and movies about children fighting in an arena do the death.

Here are some choice quotes from the article

    • “I don’t want to kill you,” she told Julianna Pettey. Julianna, also 12, looked her in the eye. “I will probably kill you first,” she said. She put her hands on Rylee’s shoulders. “I might stab you.”
    • “What are we going to do first?” shouted 14-year-old Sidney Martenfeld. “Are we going to kill each other first?”

“No! No violence this week,” the camp’s head counselor was busy telling the children.

    • “If I have to die, I want to die by an arrow,” Joey Royals mused to no one in particular. “Don’t kill me with a sword. I’d rather be shot.”
    • “What’s your specialty? Ours is primarily weapons,” said Frances Pool-Crane, the youngest camper at 10 years old.

“Ours is, like, half weapons,” said Briana Craig, 12. “Alliance?”

“Sure,” Frances said. The girls were decorating posters for the Games. “LOSING MEANS CERTAIN DEATH,” Frances wrote.

    • Kids can fake-die in nearly any game these days, counselor Simon Bosés said.

“But if you actually sit down and talk to them and they say, ‘I’m going to kill you,’ they don’t understand what they’re saying. Death for this age isn’t a final thing. It’s a reset.”

When children read books or watch movies, they’re observers, removed from the killing. “But when they start thinking and owning and adopting and assuming the roles, it becomes closer to them,” Toler said. “The violence becomes less egregious.”

    10. Alternate Back to the Future posters

I found these alternate posters for the first film on a Back to the Future III featurette and haven’t seen them anywhere else, so I decided to share them. Interestingly, they said the key design decision was to have Marty looking at his watch.

What do you think of the posters?

    9. Steven Moffat confirms Doctor Who can only regenerate 12 times (via Metro TV Reporter)

He accepts the rule, but rules can be broken.

“Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has conceded that the Timelord can only regenerate 12 times.

“The Doctor is currently played by Matt Smith, but will soon regenerate into his twelfth incarnation, to be played by new casting Peter Capaldi.

“Moffat spoke about the issue at the Ad-Lib event at this year’s Edinburgh TV festival, during which time session host Frank Skinner asked: ‘Do you acknowledge the convention that The Doctor can only regenerate 12 times?’

“Moffat replied simply: ‘Yes’ giving little away about how he plans to get around the probable need for future Doctors after Capaldi.

“The Doctor Who head honcho also spoke about whether he thought Capaldi would keep his distinctive Scottish accent, saying: ‘I’d be very surprised if he didn’t [keep it].’

“Moffat has previously said he thinks Capaldi will make an ‘older, trickier and fiercer’ Doctor and that the character might cause trouble for assistant Clara, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman.

“‘I think the fun story will be – and we have the opportunity here – is this is what regeneration can do to you. He can be very, very different.’”

Can the Doctor regenerate more than 12 times?

    7. Simon Pegg Has A Message For STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Haters: “F*ck You”(via Comic Book Movie)

At Star Trek 2013 con’s ‘One Trek Mind Live’ panel in Las Vegas fans voted Star Trek Into Darkness as the worst Star Trek film. Simon Pegg is not happy.

How do feel about Pegg being angry at fans?

    6. The Emperor Voiced by Mark Hamill’s Joker

    5. Does Pacific Rim Fail The Bechdel Test? (via /Film)

“The Bechdel Test, for those unfamiliar, comes from Alison Bechdel. It’s designed to illustrate a systemic problem in Hollywood, and it has three simple rules:

    • There have to be two female characters.
    • They have to talk to each other.
    • The conversation can’t be about a man”

    4. Two New Geeky Theme Parks Coming

    • Disneyland To Get A Special Thor: The Dark World Exhibit Later This Year (Bleeding Cool)
“A new Thor attraction is coming to Disneyland in Anaheim, California later this year, to coincide with the release of Thor: The Dark Worldon November the 8th. According to a post at the official Disney Parks Blog, that I was alerted to by THR, those that attend, ‘will be able to visit Asgard this fall and come face-to-face with the Mighty Avenger, Thor.'”
    • Marvel Teams With ‘Spider-Man’ Broadway Producers For $30M Touring Live Experience (via Deadline)
“Described as a ‘first-person superhero adventure’ and set to debut next year, the $30 million themed production will feature dozens of Marvel characters combined with multimedia technology, original 3D animated movies and a 4D motion ride, all in a traveling dome complex the size of two football fields. The plan is to bring the Marvel Experience to two dozen cities around the US in 2014 with weeklong stays in each. ‘Hero Ventures is developing a themed entertainment concept that we expect will be a transformative, traveling destination that will deliver to fans and families an exciting, groundbreaking and unique experience,’ said Sean Haran, Marvel’s VP Business Development”

I wonder if Disney World will get a Thor exhibit?
Death is reset – I guess that comes from kids playing so many video games.
I think they picked the best poster for Back to the Future's release.
      And dig Pegg's response!

    2. Pat Dilloway on August 23, 2013 1:57 pm

Hunger Games camp probably isn't any different than the video games the kids play at home. Or people playing paintball in the woods and stuff. I think I would have lasted about a minute in a real Hunger Games scenario

    3. DAVID WALSTON on August 23, 2013 2:23 pm

WOW! So many great things. Simon Pegg is a Geek Icon when he speaks we should listen…just not when the kids are around. I figured that Steven Moffat would figure a way out of just the 12. In the Classic series there were ways that the Master got around it, so why not the Doctor.

    4. Tony Laplume on August 23, 2013 5:35 pm

Pegg has every reason to be upset. Into Darkness was awesome. I'm mystified that anyone could think so poorly of it as that recent poll that listed it at the very bottom of the film series.

    5. jeremy [retro] on August 23, 2013 7:35 pm

Simon Pegg, he is a hoot… the star wars [joker] was crazy fun… nice mix of conceplt poster for back to the future.

    6. Yolanda Renee on August 24, 2013 2:32 am

Sorry, I find death as a reset quit frightening – is that why young men think the cure for boredom is murder? Dr. Who rocks – he'll find a way to overcome the 12 limit!

    7. Maurice Mitchell on August 24, 2013 5:57 am

I heard about that shocking murder Yolanda. People will blame video games. He does rock!

    8. Maurice Mitchell on August 24, 2013 6:00 am

I've thought about that too David, but the Master stole bodies which the Doctor would never do. We'll see.

    9. Maurice Mitchell on August 24, 2013 9:54 pm

      @jeremy [retro] crazy fun indeed
@Captain_Bandido I wouldn't put it under The Final Frontier. That was awfulsauce
@Alex J. Cavanaugh A Thor exhibit would be great even if they only had a hammer that no one could lift.
@Pat Dilloway I would have died in the horn fight anyway.

    10. He Geek She Geek on August 25, 2013 2:47 am

So can The Doctor regenerate 12 times or does he have only 12 lives? If it is the former, then we actually have one more Doctor to go after Capaldi
