While a lot of superheroes have been hitting theaters lately, not a lot of minority superheroes have made the trip to the big screen. It turns out that’s changing with Captain America 2: Winter Soldier. None other than the legendary Falcon will be making an appearance, played by Anthony Mackie. Mackie (who co-starred in The Hurt Locker) gave some interesting details in an interview on Ain’t It Cool News about his role. The big question everyone wanted to know was, “Does Falcon fly in Captain America 2?” Anthony Mackie kept it simple:
“I will have wings. I will be able to fly. I will be a superhero and fight people, namely the Winter Soldier.”
Unlike a lot of actors playing superheroes, Anthony Mackie is taking the role seriously. He says:
It was funny; a lot of the research I found was online. My older brother was a huge comic book buff. So when the news came out online, he called me and just gave me the whole rundown. Luckily, I have a lot of friends who weren’t cool growing up, but who are really cool now, so they read a lot of comic books. So I would just call and ask them, and they would send me all of this stuff online, and I got to read a bunch of the old comic books. It’s fortunate, because it’s a take off the comic book, it’s not the exactly storyline of the comic book.
He didn’t say much else, citing fears of getting replaced in the cast. So in case you’re not familiar with him, here’s the answer to the question, “Who’s Falcon?” Falcon was the first mainstream African-American superhero (Black Panther, introduced earlier, was African), and an important part of the Captain America mythos. He was just an average guy with a trained falcon until he found himself tricked onto an island and hunted by Nazis. Captain America trained him to fight back and take on the role of costumed hero, Falcon. Falcon ended up as Captain America’s sidekick throughout the seventies, and ultimately ended up in the Defenders and the Avengers at times. He can form a psychic link with birds, particularly with his pet falcon Redwing, and uses a pair of artificial wings to fly.
What do you think? Are you excited about Falcon? Do you think Falcon will make Captain America 2 worse? Let us know in the comments.

It will add a bit of super power fantasy to the movie. Not that a genetically enhanced man is real, but you know what I mean.
I hope they revise the costume and such because he looks a little goofy. I suppose that costume was groovy back in the 70s.
I felt the same way. When I heard, my first thought was, "Falcon is kind of over the top." But then I realized we're talking about Captain America, who fights alongside a god who throws lightning, a guy who turns into a green monster, and a man who flies in a suit of armor. Falcon will fit right in.
