A new trailer dropped over the weekend for the Tom Cruise science-fiction epic Oblivion (2013). Here’s the trailer, along with a break down of what it’s about.

Above Image: Oblivion (2013) Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) surveying the Earth

Warning: There are some minor spoilers, but nothing that isn’t revealed in the trailer or the novel.

    Trailer #3

Tagline: Earth is a memory worth fighting for.

    Official Synopsis

From Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski and critically
acclaimed creator Arvid Nelson (Rex Mundi) comes an original sci-fi
adventure of epic proportions. In a future where the Earth’s surface has
been irradiated beyond recognition, the remnants of humanity live above
the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins.
But when surface drone repairman Jak (IMDb uses Jack) discovers a mysterious woman in a
crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will
force him to question everything he knows.

    History

Created and directed by Joseph Kosinski, he came up with the concept before making Tron: Legacy. He developed it into a graphic novel with Arvid Nelson. The screenplay was written by Kosinski, William Monahan, Karl Gajdusek and Michael Arndt.

The movie rights were originally sold to Disney, but they wanted a PG rating. It was felt this would “strangle” the film creatively, and it was sold to Universal. They’re shooting for a PG-13 rating.

On April 12th the film was released in IMAX format, one week ahead of its wide release on April 19, 2013.

Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment, said, “With the one-two punch of an early IMAX release window
and the film’s expanded aspect ratio, we believe Oblivion is the perfect
kick-off to our 2013 summer slate. We’re ecstatic about continuing our
longstanding relationship with Tom Cruise, director Joseph Kosinski and
the Universal team to bring this highly anticipated action-adventure to
    IMAX audiences around the world.”

    The Concept

Kosinski told Comic Book Resources that “It’s a love story that explores various themes ranging from identity to redemption.”

Here’s how the voice over describes the concept: “60 years ago, Earth was attacked. We won the war, but they destroyed half the planet. Everyone’s been evacuated. Nothing human remains. We’re here for drone repair. We’re the mop up crew.”

“It’s a sci-fi adventure that spans two different worlds
and two different times. It’s epic in terms of its scale and scope, but
it’s a character driven story with a small cast.” Kosinski said.

    “I first came up
with the concept when I moved from New York to Los Angeles. I was
inspired by old sci-fi models like The Twilight Zone to find an
emotional, dramatic story that would raise interesting questions and
play with perspective. I wanted to build the story around those few
characters, but at the same time ask the bigger universal questions that
are integral to science fiction, questions about our existence, our
purpose in the big scheme of things.”

    The Characters

Here is Kosinski’s description of the plot that I’ve expanded to include the character names.

“The main character, [Jack Harper] (Tom Cruise), is an
ex-soldier who works as a drone repairman on this barren planet. He
fixes the drones that patrol the surface looking to destroy what’s left
of the Scavengers, a savage alien race.

“[Jack] has a partner, Vika ( Andrea Riseborough), who’s a
by the book kind of career officer and she works as his ‘eye-in-the-sky,’ scanning for damaged drones and monitoring Scavenger
    activity.

“One day, [Jack] comes across a spacecraft that’s crashed, and
inside he finds this mysterious woman in ‘deltasleep’ [Julia Rusakova (Olga Kurylenko)]. He rescues her
from the Scavengers and takes her back to their Skytower, which is high
above the clouds. When the woman wakes up, her story turns their lives
upside down and sends each of them on an adventure of self-discovery.”

Morgan Freeman plays Malcolm Beech, the “leader of the human resistance.” We have to assume this is a resistance against the aliens that have taken over the Earth known as Scavengers.

The Scavengers are described as alien “scavengers who collect ancient artifacts from the polluted surface below.” They are extremely dangerous based on Jack’s reactions.

Caught it yesterday – looks intriguing.

    2. Pat Dilloway on December 10, 2012 4:27 pm

This reminds me of something I read a year or so ago in a writing critique group, only in that case the humans lived underground instead of in the clouds but it similarly focused on a devastated Earth and humans who had to go up to the surface to repair stuff until one uncovers something. Anyway, clearly this movie is plagiarized off that.

    3. Melissa Bradley on December 10, 2012 6:00 pm

It looks very interesting, though I probably will not see it til DVD. Reminds me of those old 60, 70's sci fi films. There's so much coming out next year if the Mayan zombies don't eat our brains first.

    4. Liesel Hill on December 10, 2012 6:41 pm

Cool trailer. I gotta say, I'm WAY more excited for that one than I am for Jack Reacher. Also, why are 99% of action movies about guys named Jack? Just wondering. 😀

    5. Maurice Mitchell on December 10, 2012 7:15 pm

Liesel, I noticed that too. Jack must be a manly name. As for Reacher, it seems like a total miscast. Besides the fact that Reacher is supposed to be huge, he's also quiet, which Tom Cruise is not.

    6. Maurice Mitchell on December 10, 2012 7:16 pm

Could be a DVD pick Melissa. Let's hope the Mayan apocalypse doesn't happen before Iron Man 3! 😉

    7. Maurice Mitchell on December 10, 2012 7:18 pm

It's kind of a familiar concept Pat. Nothing really new about it, but it might do it in an interesting way. I'm on the fence myself.

    8. Maurice Mitchell on December 10, 2012 7:18 pm

It is Alex. I wasn't really interested till the trailer.

    9. MPax on December 10, 2012 10:19 pm

OK, this looks like a decent movie. I'm really excited about the new Star Trek. 😀 😀 😀

    10. Colin "Fitz" Biggs on December 12, 2012 12:10 am

It looks like it could be fun and Kosinski, despite what others say Tron Legacy did, hasn't done me wrong.

    11. Maurice Mitchell on December 12, 2012 4:35 am

It does look like a fun movie Colin. In a sort of dark and terrifying way. 🙂 Tron 2 is better than most people give it credit for don't you think?

    12. Colin "Fitz" Biggs on December 12, 2012 7:49 am

I liked it for what it was. Expectations for that film were way too high.
