Sigourney Weaver |
The most important actress in science fiction is Sigourney Weaver. But that’s not why we love her. We love her perfect mix of beauty, grace, toughness and humor.
Sigourney Weaver (born Sandra Alexandra Weaver on October 8, 1949) is the daughter of TV producer Sylvester L. Weaver Jr.
A tall girl (at 13 she was already 5′ 10″) Weaver was constantly laughing at and picked on in school. She gained acceptance by becoming the class clown.
Sigourney Weaver is most famous for her role of tough Ellen Ripley in the four Alien films: Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (1992), and Alien Resurrection (1997). Weaver got her first Academy Award nomination for Aliens. It’s considered a landmark in the history of science fiction and Ellen Ripley is a major step in challenging the perceptions of gender roles in cinema. Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley is #2 in our list of the Top 100 Fictional Space Travelers of All Time.
She earned the nickname “The Sci Fi Queen” with geeky roles like Dana Barrett in Ghostbusters and its sequel Ghostbusters II, Galaxy Quest, Futurama, WALL-E, Paul and scientist Grace Augustine in Avatar (2009).
Weaver has been nominated for three Academy Awards, three BAFTA Awards (one win), two Emmy Awards, six Saturn Awards (two wins) and six Golden Globe Awards. In 1988 she won two Golden Globe Awards for Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl. Sigourney Weaver became the first person ever to have won two acting Golden Globe Awards in the same year. She was also nominated for a Drama Desk Award and a Tony.
Sigourney Weaver currently has the lead role on USA Network’s Political Animals as Elaine

She certainly did help change things so that women didn't just have to be eye candy. Really in the late 70s-80s you had her, Carrie Fisher, and Linda Hamilton who all had ass-kicking roles in SF movies so that's cool.
I think she earned. Have to admit my favorite role of hers was as Gwen in Galaxy Quest. She made for a sexy blonde.
She is one of my favorite 'women who kick butt' – she has earned sci-fi queen for sure!
now i know why i love sigourney weaver. because I love sci fi!

my wife just the other day said… she was not a hot woman, i repeated that back in my head and then to my wife… i said what about ghostbusters… the list went on… the response was the same. got to galaxy quest… now we have a winner. she is a talented lady, did she win for overall sci-fi queen…?
It was a revolutionary time Pat. Never thought of it that way.
A pioneer in the kick-ass women field. I wish there were more like her now.
She earned it. She was the first bad ass gal in a lead. She's a good actress, and I don't find her at all annoying.
By The Gods, YES!!! Sigourney Weaver is the ultimate SciFi queen. Her role as Ellen Ripley alone would make her queen, but add Galaxy Quest and all the others… She is one of the main reasons I am a huge fan of SciFi.
Good choice. I never thought of that until I saw it here, Mo. I probably would have said someone like Mindy from Mork and Mindy.
Good call Jay. Stay tuned man
She is kick ass! Her physical stature and presence certainly make her o of the more believe able female action heroes. And we'll see plenty more of her in one shape or the other, because she is confirmed to appear in the Avatar sequels.
