10 Fall Genre TV Shows You May Want To Watch In 2012 [Television]

The television stations are all posting their fall schedule and here are the genre shows that you may want to watch this fall season.

A bunch of new genre shows from last year are canceled, like Awake. A few shows are ending like Eureka. Some shows are returning, like Alphas.

Since the major television stations have released their fall season, I decided to give a run-down of ten shows you may want to watch this fall season.

    1. Do No Harm (NBC)

Summary: Dr. Jason Cole is a highly respected neurosurgeon who has it all – a lucrative career, confident charm, and the gift of compassion. But he also has a deep, dark secret. One morning, when he wakes up disoriented in a wrecked hotel room amidst several near-naked women he’s never seen before, he knows one thing: it’s happening again. Every night at the same hour, something inside Jason changes, leaving him almost unrecognizable – seductive, devious, borderline sociopathic. This new man is his dangerous alternate personality who goes by the name of “Ian Price.” For years as he’s battled Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), Jason has been able to keep Ian in check with a powerful experimental sedative. But now his – their – body has developed a resistance to the serum, setting Ian free once again. And to make matters worse, after being suppressed for so long, Ian’s hell-bent on taking revenge on his oppressor. With everyone Jason cares about at risk – patients, friends, co-workers and even the woman he loves – he’s got to stop Ian once and for all. Will they find some common ground, or will they bring each other down? Hell hath no fury like an alter scorned.

    Season Premiere: Sundays 10/9c

    Official site http://www.nbc.com/do-no-harm/

First Thoughts: This one sounds like a cross between Dr. Jekyll and House.  Pretty cool. If you’ve never seen the British show Jekyll by the way. Look for it.

    2. Revolution (NBC)

Summary: Our entire way of life depends on electricity. So what would happen if it just stopped working? Well, one day, like a switch turned off, the world is suddenly thrust back into the dark ages. Planes fall from the sky, hospitals shut down, and communication is impossible. And without any modern technology, who can tell us why? Now, 15 years later, life is back to what it once was long before the industrial revolution: families living in quiet cul-de-sacs, and when the sun goes down, the lanterns and candles are lit. Life is slower and sweeter. Or is it? On the fringes of small farming communities, danger lurks. And a young woman’s life is dramatically changed when a local militia arrives and kills her father, who mysteriously – and unbeknownst to her – had something to do with the blackout. This brutal encounter sets her and two unlikely companions off on a daring coming-of-age journey to find answers about the past in the hopes of reclaiming the future. From director Jon Favreau (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2”) and the fertile imaginations of J.J. Abrams and Eric Kripke (“Supernatural”), comes a surprising “what if” action-adventure series, where an unlikely hero will lead the world out of the dark. Literally.

    Season Premiere: Mondays 10/9c

    Official Site: http://www.nbc.com/revolution/

First Thoughts: It looks like a tired retread of the
post-apocalyptic world, but I thought the same thing about Falling Skies
and it’s heading for season two. When you add Jon Favreau and J.J.
Abrams it sounds even better. On the other hand, Abram’s last show Alcatraz died on the vine.

    3. Grimm (NBC)

Summary: is a new drama series inspired by the classic Grimm’s Fairy
Tales.Portland homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli, “Turn
The Beat Around”) discovers he is descended from an elite line of
criminal profilers known as “Grimms,” charged with keeping balance
between humanity and the mythological creatures of the world. As he tries to hide the dangers of his new found calling from his
girlfriend, Juliette Silverton, (Bitsie Tulloch, “quarterlife”), and
his partner, Hank Griffin (Russell Hornsby, “Lincoln Heights”), he
becomes ever more entrenched in the ancient rivalries and alliances of
the Grimm world. With help from his confidant, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell,
“Prison Break”), a reformed Grimm creature himself, Nick must navigate
through the forces of a larger-than-life mythology, facing off with
Hexenbiests, Blutbads and all manner of ancient evils, including royal
lines dating back to the original profilers themselves, The Grimm
Brothers. Reggie Lee (“Persons Unknown”) and Sasha Roiz (“Caprica”)
    also star.

    Season Premiere: FRIDAYS 9/8c

    Official Site: http://www.nbc.com/grimm/

First Thoughts: I like this show and am glad it’s getting another season. It’s episodic, but not in a way that makes it confusing.

    4. Last Resort (ABC)

Summary: 500 feet beneath the ocean’s surface, the U.S. ballistic missile submarine Colorado receive their orders. Over a radio channel, designed only to be used if their homeland has been wiped out, they’re told to fire nuclear weapons at Pakistan. Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) demands confirmation of the orders only to be unceremoniously relieved of duty by the White House. XO Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman) finds himself suddenly in charge of the submarine and facing the same difficult decision. When he also refuses to fire without confirmation of the orders, the Colorado is targeted, fired upon, and hit. The submarine and its crew find themselves crippled on the ocean floor, declared rogue enemies of their own country. Now, with nowhere left to turn, Chaplin and Kendal take the sub on the run and bring the men and women of the Colorado to an exotic island. Here they will find refuge, romance and a chance at a new life, even as they try to clear their names and get home. Last Resort stars Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age) as Captain Marcus Chaplin, Scott Speedman (The Vow) as XO Sam Kendal, Daisy Betts (Sea Patrol) as Lieutenant Grace Shepard, Dichen Lachman (Being Human) as Tani Tumrenjack, Daniel Lissing (Crownies) as SEAL Officer James King, Sahr Ngaujah (House of Payne) as Mayor Julian Serrat, Camille de Pazzis as Sophie Gerard, Autumn Reeser (Hawaii Five-O, No Ordinary Family) as Kylie Sinclair, Jessy Schram (Falling Skies, Once Upon a Time) as Christine Kendal. Recurring guest star is Robert Patrick (The Gangster Squad) as Master Chief Joseph Prosser. Last Resort was written by Shawn Ryan (The Shield, The Unit, The Chicago Code) and Karl Gajdusek, who are also executive producers along with Martin Campbell and Marney Hochman Nash. The pilot for Last Resort was directed by Martin Campbell.

    Official Site http://beta.abc.go.com/shows/last-resort

First Thoughts: It could be interesting and I like the actors.
I’m confused about the premise though. It sounds like an undersea drama,
but they live on an island?

    5. The Following (FOX)

Summary: What if U.S. serial killers were able to work together and form alliances across the country, thanks to one psychotic serial killer who brought them all together? That’s the premise of “The Following,” the terrifying new thriller from Kevin Williamson. Notorious serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) escapes from death row and strikes up a new killing spree, leading the FBI to call on retired agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) to help with the case since he was responsible for Carroll’s capture nine years ago. Hardy works closely with an FBI team, which includes Jennifer Mason (Jeananne Goossen) and Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore). Their investigation leads Hardy to Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea), Carroll’s ex-wife and mother of the criminal’s 10-year-old son (Kyle Catlett). Can she help Hardy get a second chance to capture Carroll, as he’s faced with not one but a cult of serial killers?

    Season Premiere Mondays (midseason TBD)

First Thoughts: A new show starring Kevin Bacon and a bunch of organized crazies? Count me in. I wonder if he’s related to everyone?

    6. The Big Bang Theory (CBS)

Summary: A woman who moves into an apartment next door to two brilliant, but socially awkward, physicists shows them how little they know about life outside of the laboratory.

    Official Site: http://www.cbs.com/shows/big_bang_theory/

First Thoughts: This show is great. I hope it lasts five twenty more seasons. An middle-age Sheldon would be hilarious.

    7. Alphas Season 2 (SyFy)

In Syfy’s action-packed hit drama series, an unlikely team of ordinary people with superhuman physical and mental abilities – known as Alphas – takes on mysterious cases the CIA, FBI and Pentagon are unable to solve and go head-to-head with criminal Alphas.  Season 2 picks up eight months after last year’s finale with the stage set for an explosive turn of events at the Binghamton facility (the Guantanamo of the Alpha world) that could have devastating, far-reaching consequences. Dr. Lee Rosen (Emmy Award-winner and Academy Award-nominee David Strathairn), having exposed the existence of Alphas to the unsuspecting public, finds himself discredited and imprisoned by a government desperate to cover up his revelation. The rest of the core team has disbanded and some, without Rosen’s guidance and care, have regressed to their old, destructive ways. They must now battle their individual demons in order to reunite and try to save their own. Alphas also stars Malik Yoba, Warren Christie, Azita Ghanizada, Ryan Cartwright and Laura Mennell. Erin Way (Detroit 187, Private Practice) joins the cast this season as “Kat” a mysterious young loner whose Alpha ability allows her to pick up any skill at a glance. But while her skills are permanent, her personal memories are short-lived. The series is produced by Universal Cable Productions and BermanBraun Television with executive producers Bruce Miller, Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun, Gene Stein and Zak Penn. Penn and co-executive producer Michael Karnow are series creators.

Season Premiere: Monday, July 23 at 10PM

    Official Site: www.syfy.com/alphas

First Thoughts: It looks like they’re changing the premise from them being government sponsored (“We’re in charge.”) to being fugitives. It’s usually not a good sign when this happens. The first season of this show was pretty good, so I’m looking forward to the next season.

    8. Insane or Inspired? (SyFy)

Summary: This new series features the most exciting videos from the Internet that celebrate the world of imagination, invention, and extreme experiences. Actors Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Samm Levine (Freaks & Geeks), Brooke Hogan, Ralph Garman, as well as television personality Josh Gates, host of Syfy’s Destination Truth, join comedians Ben Gleib, Owen Benjamin, Jodi Miller, Elliot Chang, Jermaine Fowler, Adam Ray, Christiana Pazistky, KT Tatara and Janet Varney to provide their unique commentary on each of the clips. The result is a fast-paced hour-long countdown of hilarious viral videos. Insane or Inspired? is produced by Comcast Studios with Jay James, Betsy Rott, and Sean Olsen serving as executive producers.

Season Premiere: Friday, May 25 at 10PM

First Thoughts: I dunno. It looks like another Internet clip show. It could be fun, but why would I want to hear what Brooke Hogan thinks?

    9. Falling Skies (TNT )

Summary: The wait is nearly over as basic cable’s #1 new series of 2011 returns to continue its extraordinary story about life and survival in the wake of a catastrophic alien invasion. Noah Wyle stars as a college professor who becomes an unlikely resistance leader in this gripping series from DreamWorks Television and executive producer Steven Spielberg. Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Drew Roy, Maxim Knight and Connor Jessup also star.

    Season Premiere: Sunday, June 17, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)

    Official Site: www.fallingskies.com

First Thoughts: This show never really hooked with me, but the finale was pretty good. The show creator said there’s more to the aliens which meet the eye, so it should be refreshing.

    10. Perception (TNT)

Summary: Drama fans are about to meet one of the most unique crime solvers on television when TNT premieres this fascinating new series about an eccentric neuroscience professor who is recruited by the FBI to help solve complex cases. Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Award winner Eric McCormack stars as Dr. Daniel Pierce, who possesses an intimate knowledge of human behavior and a masterful understanding of the way the mind works. Although Pierce’s mind may be brilliant, it’s also damaged as he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. Perception also stars Rachael Leigh Cook, Arjay Smith and Kelly Rowan. Produced by ABC Studios, the series was created by executive producer Ken Biller and co-executive producer Mike Sussman, with McCormack serving as producer.

    Season Premiere: Monday, July 9, at 10 p.m. (ET/PT)

    Official Site: www.tntdrama.com/series/perception/

First Thoughts: Didn’t they already try the schizophrenic detective with Jeff Goldblum’s Raines? The idea of hallucinations giving clues reminds me a bit of Awake which I loved.

What do you think of the upcoming season? Is there something you’re looking forward to? Do you even watch television anymore?

Revolution, Last Resort, and Perception all sound like they will be worth checking out.

    3. M Pax on May 16, 2012 5:02 pm

I'm interesting in Revolution. I enjoy Grimm & am glad Falling Skies is coming back. Do you know if Terra Nova is coming back? I love me some man-eating reptiles. 🙂

    4. Alex J. Cavanaugh on May 16, 2012 5:17 pm

Already a Big Bang Theory fan. Revolution sounds interesting.

Tony, there's a sneak peek to Perception that makes it sound really good. I haven't seen anything for Last Resort though.

    6. Maurice Mitchell on May 16, 2012 5:59 pm

I'm happy about Grimm too. Unfortunately, Terra Nova was not picked up for a second season. I heard Netflix might but it though.

      Alex, bazinga.

Once NBC's Chuck ended, I was done with a chain around my ankle to be sitting in front of the television set. I have one thing to say "I AM FREE"… boy the way I sound is like I am from the 1950's.

    9. Craig Edwards on May 25, 2012 7:11 pm

Hey just found out Revolution will be shooring here on the coast in North Carolina – now I'm even more interested in it. It's also convenient for Jon Favreau because he'll be here shooting Iron Man 3 until late in the year anyway!

    10. never on May 30, 2012 10:18 pm

Some of those are not genre shows at all, like Last Resort or TBBT.
