What If Yoda Turned to the Dark Side and Became a Strong Evil Sith Lord?

Could the Jedi Master have turned to the Dark Side of the Force? Canonically, no — but that hasn’t stopped fans from imagining it. Digital artist Rabittooth created this take on the ultimate Dark Lord of the Sith: Darth Yoda, complete with a red lightsaber and a look that’s a long way from “wars not make one great.”

Why A Sith Yoda Would Have Been Terrifying

Yoda spent 800 years resisting the pull of anger and fear — the same emotions that turned Anakin Skywalker into Darth Vader. A Sith Yoda would have brought centuries of Jedi mastery to the Dark Side, making him arguably more dangerous than Vader or even Palpatine himself.

Yoda’s Real Brush with the Dark Side: Dark Rendezvous

The Star Wars Legends novel Yoda: Dark Rendezvous (Sean Stewart) gets closer to answering this than almost anything else in the franchise. Count Dooku reaches out to the Jedi Council claiming he regrets turning to the Dark Side and wants to return to the Light. Yoda suspects it’s a trap — and he’s right — but agrees to meet Dooku face to face anyway.

Dooku’s real goal is to turn Yoda, believing a Sith Yoda would eclipse even his own master, Darth Sidious, in power. He dares Yoda to let the Dark Side in for just a moment. Surprisingly, Yoda accepts, driven by curiosity rather than any desire for power. As Yoda opens himself to it, his face begins to shift, resembling Sidious’s own, and Dooku senses a level of raw power that genuinely unnerves him — greater, he realizes, than Palpatine’s own connection to the Force. Dooku’s reaction says it all: “What have I done? What darkness have I unleashed upon this galaxy?”

Yoda pulls himself back before it goes any further, and the moment passes. In Legends continuity, it’s the last time Dooku ever tries to turn him — attempting it again would mean trading one dangerous evil for a far greater one. The scene reframes Yoda not as someone immune to the Dark Side, but as someone who has felt its pull firsthand and consciously chosen against it, which is a far more interesting answer than simple purity.
