Did you wish the last G.I. Joe movie had been more faithful to the 80s show? Well, the sequel looks to be a whole lot better. One highlight of the Superbowl are the commercials, and one of the biggest was the trailer for G.I.Joe: Retaliation (2012).
I’m not a huge G.I. Joe fan. I loved the 80s cartoon, but never had the toys. The original movie was OK in a campy way, but unfaithful to the series. The new trailer looks like the sequel will be more faithful to the 80s cartoon.
Here’s the new trailer.
Snake Eyes Gets Rid of the Face
Fans love the ninja Snake Eyes (Ray Park). In the last movie they decided to give his mask a nose and set of frowning lips. In the sequel he has the mask we know and love. It has lips, but he doesn’t look like Steven Tyler. Snake Eyes faithfully looks like he did in the cartoon show.
He also gets to ride a sweet motorcycle that breaks into rockets and shoots ninja stars out of the air.
Cobra Commander Gets Rid of the Mask
Cobra Commander was the most unfaithful part of the last film. First, he was a crazy scientist. Then, he was a wounded soldier. Finally, he was the Cobra Commander with a really goofy mask. For G.I.Joe 2 he gets the same dome mask we know and love from the cartoon.
The H.IS.S. Tank Rolls Out
Whenever G.I. Joe fought COBRA they had to fight H.I.S.S. tanks. COBRA had a never ending supply of these things and the last movie had none. In G.I. Joe 2 we get some familiar H.I.S.S. tanks. I hope they don’t explode as easily as they did in the show. Duke could sneeze on one and they would burst into flame.
Roadblock Drops Rhymes and Bullets
The most popular African-American characters is “Roadblock”. He was known for two things: Heavy weapons and speaking in rhyme. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shows both skills as he quotes from Jay-Z’s “Don’t Let Me Die” and fires a ginormous gun. This is very faithful to the 80s show.
For fun, here’s Roadblock’s invaluable PSA not to give strangers your address when they call you. I didn’t realize it was such a common problem back in the 80s.
Zartan
The one thing I hope isn’t faithful from the cartoon is Zartan. We know the master of disguise is in the second film, but I sure hope he doesn’t turn out to be the Cajun chef he was from the show.
Do you hope the G.I. Joe sequel is more faithful to the cartoon? Do you have any fond memories of the show?

I have to admit…I got a little excited. But I really like Dwayne Johnson. It looks like he has a great year coming in 2012.
The new one looks better than the first movie, which was definitely lacking. And yes, I did have the action figures way back in the day…
If Journey 2 does well it could be his best year ever.

Alex, seriously flawed is a kind way of saying it. LOL Which ones did you have?

Just for reference, that's not a HISS tank. It's the "Tread Ripper" aka the Ripsaw made by Howe and Howe and it's a Joe vehicle.
Thanks for the heads up Dake. Your right! Guess we'll have to wait and see if we get the tanks.
