We haven’t visited the world of the Jurassic films in a long time, and it’s been even longer since they were good. Rebirth hopes that a combination of the old (the return of original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp) and the new (a star-studded cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali) will be the formula that will make fans embrace the franchise’s return, even though it shares an overall title with the contentious second trilogy. Those films went over as well as a fart in a spacesuit.
The first trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth, the first in a new series of Jurassic films directed by Gareth Edwards, the filmmaker of Rogue One, was released by Universal today. Three enormous wild dinosaurs hold the key to a potentially revolutionary drug discovery for humanity. The new movie, set five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, follows a brand-new cast in a world where dinosaurs have not only returned but are also somewhat out of style. But our human heroes are reminded of how old and potent the threat posed by dinosaurs is when a secret operation to collect the biological data required for the research goes astray. And uncover a mystery that has the potential to alter the course of history once more.

Scarlett Johansson plays Zora Bennett in Rebirth, the chief covert ops specialist who must guide Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey from Final Fantasy XIV and Wicked) on his quest for his groundbreaking study. Rupert Friend plays large pharma executive Martin Krebs, Mahershala Ali plays Zora’s right-hand man Duncan Kincaid, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo plays Reuben Delgado, the father of a family entangled in a perilous mission following a shipwreck.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Edwards described the design process for the new, horrifying mutant dinosaur, which is briefly shown in the official Jurassic World Rebirth teaser. He explained that he drew inspiration from vintage cinema monsters that have terrified audiences for decades. He revealed that the T-Rex from the first Jurassic Park picture, Alien’s Xenomorph, and Return of the Jedi’s Rancor were all influences. “When you make a creature, you get a big, massive pot and you pour in your favorite monsters from other films and books,” he added. “Some Rancor went in there, some H.R. Giger went in there, a little T. rex went in there…”
Nearly three years later, Rebirth still has a lot of obstacles to face before it can emerge from the shadow Dominion left behind. Will it be able to bring dinosaurs back to being entertaining, as Koepp hopes? When it opens in theaters on July 2, we’ll find out.
