Something seemed to be shifting when DC announced a release date for a Batman villain movie weeks ahead of a Batman movie. And it has now. Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, starring Robert Pattinson, has been postponed by another year. The new release date is set for October 1, 2027. The original release date was set for October 2, 2026.
Deadline’s article on the release date included some non-DC information as well. While 2025 will see a few genre flicks change, the October 2026 date will now include a forthcoming production from director Alejandro González Iñárritu and actor Tom Cruise. The Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan vampire movie Sinners is returning on April 18, while another Pattinson movie, Mickey 17, is moving a few weeks to March 7.
The delay was rumored to have occurred because DC Studios co-president James Gunn had not yet seen a completed script of Reeves’s Clayface, written by Mike Flanagan and scheduled for release on September 11, 2026, weeks before Batman. When questioned about the time, Gunn was unconcerned that Clayface and Reeves’ Batman were in separate realms. However, since viewers would now have to wait even longer for Batman to arrive, his film will go a Batmanless route.
At CinemaCon in April 2022, it was revealed that Pattinson and Reeves would return for a sequel. By August, Tomlin will return to co-write the screenplay with Reeves. The Batman – Part II was initially scheduled for release in October 2025, but it was postponed by a year to 2026. Now it’s been delayed again by another year.
In the movie, Wright, Serkis, and Farrell return to their respective parts as Gordon, Pennyworth, and the Penguin. The start of filming is set for April 2025.
Oof. The interval between films is five and a half years. At four years, The Dark Knight to The Dark Knight Rises was the most prolonged interval between a Batman movie and its follow-up. I doubt that Warner Bros.’ bean counters are pleased with this development.
