5 Supervillains Who Broke Captain America’s Shield

In the trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, there was a lot of press over the fact that we briefly saw Captain America’s broken shield. That turned out to be a hallucination, but it has happened in the comics. According to comic book lore, Captain America’s shield is composed of a vibranium-adamantium alloy that makes it totally unique and nigh-indestructible. It’s survived direct impacts from the Hulk’s fists and Thor’s hammer. But it’s not completely indestructible. Here are five people who managed to break Cap’s shield.

    1. Molecule Man

Molecule Man is a supervillain who can control molecules, which is pretty much everything, so he’s basically one of the most powerful villains in the Marvel Universe.

In The Avengers 215, he proves his awesome power by disintegrating Thor’s hammer, Iron Man’s armor, the Silver Surfer’s board, and Captain America’s shield. But when the Avengers defeat him, the Molecule Man agrees to reassemble everything. Nice.

    2. Doctor Doom

In the Secret Wars limited series, a godlike being known only as the Beyonder transports Earth’s mightiest superheroes and supervillains onto a distant world to fight it out. When Doctor Doom steals the Beyonder’s power in issue 11, he incinerates all the heroes with an energy blast, and we see Captain America’s broken shield in the remains.

But the Beyonder (in the body of Klaw) tricks Doctor Doom into bringing the heroes back to life, gets his power back, and grants each hero one wish. Captain America could have wished for world peace or maybe actual superpowers. Instead, he wished to have his shield repaired. Yeah, he loves that thing.

    3. Thanos

In the 1991 mini-series The Infinity Gauntlet, super-baddie Thanos assembles six Infinity Gems on his glove to gain power over Time, Space, Mind, Soul, Reality, and Power. With his new godlike powers, he slaughters half the sentient life in the Galaxy with a snap of his fingers. But he goes too far when he breaks Captain America’s shield. Oh, and kills Captain America.

Fortunately for the universe, Thanos’ alleged granddaughter Nebula manages to get the Gauntlet and uses it to reverse the effects of Thanos’ rampage. In the process, Captain America’s shield is restored. Oh, and billions are brought back to life.

    4. King Thor

When Odin’s father dies, Thor becomes king of Asgard, infused with the Odin Force. The Odin Force gives him near infinite power as well as an infinite temper.

In a fight of rage in Thor 73 (vol 2, if you’re counting), King Thor kills Captain America and breaks his shield. However, that didn’t last long. Much like the bout with Thanos, Lord Thor goes back in time to change history in issue 79 so this never happened. But it still counts.

    5. The Serpent

In the “Fear Itself” mini-series, the Asgardian god of fear known as the Serpent is freed and goes on a rampage. He believes he’s the rightful ruler of Asgard and transforms various heroes and villains into his sinister army to overthrow Odin.

During a battle with the Avengers, the Serpent catches and breaks Captain America’s shield in half with his bare hands. But much like the other incidents, it doesn’t stay broken for long. After the Serpent is defeated, Asgardian dwarves (literal dwarves, not little people) repair the shield. The process leaves a scar, which Captain America decides to leave for the character. Except that other artists decided not to use the scar.

Who else do you think could break Captain America’s shield?

I hope no one else can, it would break the spirit to what Cap represents…

Both the shield and the Captain have been resurrected a lot. I'd be more worried about a force that could destry Thor's Hammer though.

Doctor Doom came pretty close to destroying the Avengers so that definitely counts for something.

Hmm, I believe that powerman-(the amazing Spiderman series that include in the avengers as well) can destroy Cap's shield Because that dude literally is indestructible in most of the series and also he has immense super strength, enough to beat hulk and thor but there only has been one or three battles between one of the hulks(red hulk to be especific) and powerman… But yeah I have to say, Thor's hammer is actually more Worth to save than Cap's shield Because Captain America can have as many shields as he likes Because black panther can sell vibranium to Tony Stark aka Iron Man and Tony can recreate his father's shield easily since he is one of the smartest heroes in the marvel universe and plus if he can find solutions to how to defeat godlike supervillains, he can find out a way to recreate Cap's shield. And no I am not saying that I do not care for cap or his shield I'm just saying an opinion that also has some facts in it. From my knowledge I believe that all of this talk about Cap's shield is really not worth it because a lot of ppl be saying that his shield is unbreakable and others say it is unbreakable and we all know that, that shield was made to be indestructible but due to some comic writers the line/position/story of the shield was never kept in it's place to be indestructible. Originally that was the idea but others thought otherwise… Anyway, it is good to know there are other ppl that actually talk about this stuff, have a great day or night or whatever everyone…
