Philip K Dick is a legendary sci-fi author who has found great success in movie adaptations. His prolific short stories and novels have been strip-mined by Hollywood for decades. His imagination and mind-bending concepts have made for entertaining movies, and some not so entertaining. For every Blade Runner, there’s a Screamers. Here are the four worst adaptations…so far.
4. Screamers (1996)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 30%
On a remote planet, killer war machines called screamers have taken on human form and infiltrate an alien outpost. Like the best of Dick’s stories, this should have been dark and paranoid with meditations on identity and control. Instead, it comes off more like a cheesy, less interesting cross between Alien and The Thing.
3. Next (2007)
Nicolas Cage, Jessica Biel; Next |
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 28%
A stage magician with the ability to see a few minutes into the future is recruited by the government to stop a nuclear holocaust. The movie is only loosely based on Dick’s original story, and only thing people found interesting about this movie is Cage’s haircut. Too bad Cage couldn’t see into the future and avoid making this movie.
2. Paycheck (2003)
Michael Jennings (Ben Affleck), Paycheck |
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 27%
An engineer is hired to work on a project so secret that he has to wipe his memory to avoid remembering he even did it. When he wakes up, he’s on the run with an envelope of mysterious objects with a strange significance. This movie suffered from a gimmicky script and the curse of Ben Affleck.
1. Imposter (2001)
Spencer Olham (Gary Sinise), Imposter |
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 22%
A government scientist has to go on the run when he’s suspected of being a cyborg implanted with an alien bomb, and has to prove his innocence. All he ended up proving was how to make a box office bomb. This movie was actually a forty minute segment in a proposed movie anthology that was extended into a full length movie. According to all the reviews, it should have stayed that way. It has the lowest box office take of any Philip K. Dick movie, just six million total.
What’s your favorite movie adaptation of Philip K. Dick? Did you see any of these?

"Paycheck" like "Daredevil" and "Gigli" had the misfortune of being released at the height of Affleck backlash. I didn't think it was terrible, just not great.
Saw Screamers – not that bad as far as sci-fi goes, – although a bit bloody – didn't enjoy that. Won't be visiting the rest.
None of these are my favourites.
Blade Runner is the best.
I've always been interested in seeing Impostor, but just haven't gotten around to it. It's hard to go wrong with Gary Sinese.
The only movie I've watched on this list is Next. I need to watch Screamers. Sounds pretty wicked. ๐
