13 Things We Learned in the New Epic IRON MAN 3 trailer

    The second Iron Man 3
trailer reveals new secrets, and here are the 13 biggest things we’ve
learned from the new Iron Man 3 trailer.

    Above
Image: Iron Man 3 (2013), Iron Man Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.)

    The new trailer for Iron
    Man 3
dropped at 9AM PST this morning and it took me a while until I can write the full post. The trailer leaked
already, but I wanted to wait for the official release of the trailer
to give my analysis. That way you can see it in all it’s brilliance.

    Here’s the trailer:

    WARNING: SPOILERS

    1. The Mandarin Is Osama Bin Laden x 1,000,000

    The
President says, “You elected me on a single platform. I will defend
this country at all costs. The Mandarin must be stopped.” This echoes
America’s hunt for terrorist #1 Osama Bin Laden. Could The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley)
really be that bad? If the trailer is any hint, the answer is hoo-boy is
    he ever!

    2. James Rhodes Goes Zero Dark Thirty

    We
see a shot of James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) in his Iron Patriot armor
blowing up a room full of Middle-Eastern guys. He’s on the hunt for the
Mandarin and he’s going Zero Dark Thirty on them.

    3. Mandarin is a Captain America Fan

    Mandarin
has a tattoo of Captain America’s shield, with an Avengers “A” on the
back of his neck. This might tie into Mandarin’s statement that “there
are no heroes.” Maybe Mandarin was a fan of Captain America back in
WWII. Kingley would have been two in 1945 when the war ended, which is
just old enough to be a fan of Captain America  back in the day.
Maybe something happened to disillusion him of heroes and he wears the tattoo as a reminder that heroes can be lost.

    4. Stark Wants Revenge

    Tony
says, “There are no politics here: just good old fashioned revenge.”
Revenge for what? What could Mandarin have done to him? Perhaps blowing up his condo with Pepper inside?

    5. Tony Loves Pepper Potts

    The
relationship with Tony and Pepper has been growing since the first film
and their chemistry is great. In this movie Tony obviously is taking
the relationship to the next level. He’s giving her a necklace. “Things
are different now.” Tony says, “I have to protect the one thing that I
can’t live without. That’s you.” Tony is a one-woman girl. Or is he…

    6. Calling Dr. Hansen…Dr. Fine…Dr. Hansen

    The
new woman in Tony’s life is Dr. Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall). In the
comics she’s a bio-technology specialist and developed the nano-tech Extremis
Armor that Tony uses. In this trailer we see Iron Man saving her. Is their
    relationship more than professional?

    7. Tony Goes Missing

    A
reporter asks “The question is: where is Tony Stark?” We know Tony gets
messed up and stranded, but apparently he disappears from sight.

    8. The Iron Legion

    Tony
needs reinforcements. Rhodey says, “That’s your department.” We see a
ton of Iron Man suits fly in. I lost count at 25! Tony says, “There’s
    my boys.”

    Iron Man 3 concept
art and various sites suggest that Tony Stark is going to have no
less than 40 different types of armor.

In one leaked clip he says he
has an “Iron Legion.” For example…

    9. Hulkbuster

    Concept
art already leaked of three of the armor types known as Hulkbuster,
Space and Heartbreaker armor. At the end of the trailer we get a peek
at the Hulkbuster armor rampaging through the docks. In the comic book, Tony Stark makes a suit of
armor strong enough and tough enough to fight the Hulk. After the
Avengers this probably seemed like a good idea, in case the “Giant Green Rage Machine”
    goes AWOL.

Update: The armors name is “Igor.”

    10. Tony One-Ups the Briefcase Armor

    One
of the coolest things in Iron Man 2 was seeing him put on his
briefcase armor. In The Avengers they tried to do something like that
by having him jump from a building and have the armor go around him.
Now we go one better. Tony leaps off an exploding building and into the
    back of his armor.

    11. Killian is Doing Some Highly Unethical Stuff

    We
get a shot of Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) striding down a hall
and into a room with a bunch of people strapping in. Presumably this
has something to do with the Extremis project since, in the comics,
he’s another bio-geneticist working with Dr. Hansen. Whatever they’re doing, they’re doing in a basement. That can’t be good.

    Plus, they got Pepper!

    12. Is that Coldblood fighting Iron Man?

    In
brief shot we see Iron Man fighting a man with long blonde hair.
Whoever they are, they can handle themselves.

    Actor James Badge Dale
talked about his role as the big, bad Iron Man 3 villain
Eric Savin, “Ben Kingsley is the mouthpiece. Guy Pearce is the brain.
I’m the muscle. Being in a big CGI action movie is a weird departure
for me” He also said, “I got to beat up grown men in robot suits…”

While Marvel has denied Dale’s going to play “The Iron Patriot” he
might play the comic book cyborg known as “Coldblood”. No matter how
you look at it though, things are going to get nasty.

    Is that Savin gone Extreme?

    13. The Mandarin is Cool

    Besides
his strange use of pausing, The Mandarin sounds like one of the
toughest, meanest and fiercest bad dudes Tony has ever faced. “Mr.
    Stark.” Mandarin says, “Today…is the first day…of what’s LEFT…of
your life. I’m gonna offer you a choice: do you want an empty life…or
    a meaningful death?”

The man looks powerful, fearless and totally insane. I like my villains like that.

If you didn’t want to watch Iron Man 3 before, I dare you not to watch now. It’s about to get real up in here!

    Synopsis

“Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony
Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark
finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on
a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every
turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is
left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and
instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back,
Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted
him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce,
Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and
Ben Kingsley, Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay
by Drew Pearce and Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super
Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of Tales of Suspense
(#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with The Invincible
Iron Man (#1) in May of 1968.”

Iron Man 3 comes to theaters May 3rd, 2013 and stars Robert Downey Jr.,
Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jon Favreau, Paul Bettany,
Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle. The film is directed by Shane Black.

I'm ready for the movie! It's been one of the best superhero series in a long time.

Good trailer, hope it showcases Shane Black's writing skills.

    4. Misty on March 7, 2013 5:09 am

I have to be honest. The only reason I watch is for RDJ. 😉

    5. Maurice Mitchell on March 7, 2013 3:36 pm

It is! It single-handedly moved Marvel into the big time.

    6. Maurice Mitchell on March 7, 2013 3:39 pm

Hopefully we'll see a few more "Shane Blackisms" Colin. 😉

    7. Maurice Mitchell on March 7, 2013 3:40 pm

It's the reason most people do. Would you watch an Iron Man movie without RDJ Misty?

    8. Tim Dart on March 27, 2013 1:44 am

Was Chow Yun Fat not available??? Shame, shame, shame. From
      Ghandi to Mandarin…
RDJ pretty much is the design for Stark now. They don't create the character without his likeness anymore. Even EMH has an actor that mimics his voice. Let's hope it doesn't go to his head though…
